Explain this song 19:18 - Dec 21 with 936 viewsspell_chekker

The answer is probably simple and I'm being a thicky thicko.

Is it sung by religious people?

Is it an atheist anthem?

Is it mocking religion?

I like the tune, melody, but not knowing the sentiments of the song leave me confused.

Learning to read clusters is not something your eyes do naturally. It takes constant practice.

Copy and paste of the lyrics:-

If God had a name what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with Him in all His glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
And yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see if, seeing meant
That you would have to believe in things like heaven
And in Jesus and the saints, and all the prophets?
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
And yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
Just tryin' to make his way…

It's always confused me.

Am I allowed to like the song or not?

You're saying that it was written by someone who doesn't care one way or the other. By someone who simply wants to make a few quid from a catchy melody?

What's not in dispute is that the young woman has got a great voice.

Why haven't we heard more of it?

I have the album

‘Where there is harmony, may we bring discord. Where there is truth, may we bring error. Where there is faith, may we bring doubt. And where there is hope, may we bring despair’

Not really my bag, spell.

This is my favourite `God` song from one of my favourite bands.

Kind of agree with all of the sentiments in this...

I always found these lyrics a tad abstract. Name the song

I lit a thin green candle
To make you jealous of me
But the room just filled up with mosquitoes
They heard that my body was free

Then I took the dust of a long sleepless night
And I put it in your little shoe
And then I confess that I tortured the dress
That you wore for the world to look through

I showed my heart to the doctor
He said I'd just have to quit
Then he wrote himself a prescription
And your name was mentioned in it

Then he locked himself in a library shelf
With the details of our honeymoon
And I hear from the nurse that he's gotten much worse
And his practice is all in a ruin

I heard of a saint who had loved you
So I studied all night in his school
He taught that the duty of lovers
Is to tarnish the golden rule

And just when I was sure that his teachings were pure
He drowned himself in the pool
His body is gone but back here on the lawn
His spirit continues to drool

An Eskimo showed me a movie
He'd recently taken of you
The poor man could hardly stop shivering
His lips and his fingers were blue

I suppose that he froze when the wind took your clothes
And I guess he just never got warm
But you stand there so nice in your blizzard of ice
Oh please, let me come into the storm

I've not got the foggiest idea about those lyrics but I'll have a stab at Led Zeppelin who do a lot of deep meaningful stuff.

No, not Led Zep, that`s more like Lord of the Rings stuff; I would say Leonard Cohen.

Would be surprised if I had heard the song before though.

Nice to hear from you Jane...

Yup, not Zep. No idea, so I'll go with Spud's guess

PS Good to see you back. Merry Xmas.

Ticks a lot of Cohen`s boxes:

Many verses, no recognisable chorus, religious stuff, lots of evocative metaphors, overt melancholy, ends bad, etc.

There again it could be Jive Bunny...
