| Reading v Swansea City : Sky Bet Championship 21/22 UPDATED SAT evening on 21:39 - Apr 16 with 4567 views | cadleigh | I like Reading a lot. Very intelligent supporters, with whom you can have a drink and a chat outside the ground. Much like Charlton in that respect. However, it's not that long since the Reading/Oxford derby was one of the most notorious in football and Reading was a very unpleasant place for away supporters. Also they made Martin and his players look like dicks not that long ago. Respect is due. | |

I’ve always found Reading a very simple and non confrontational place to go, even as a young man.

Well there was that troubled match at Elm Park in 1993, but largely our visits to Reading have been smooth enough, despite the best efforts of some our supporters to goad the home fans. I lived in Oxford in the '80s and when I couldn't get to Swans games I'd go and see United play at the Manor Ground. Reading and Swindon were particularly unpleasant matches, although now I think about it maybe the Oxford supporters were the worst. Wasn't there a documentary about their firms? This was the period when Maxwell proposed merging the two clubs...

Reading an unpleasant place for away supporters ? I’ve been to reading many times and that’s certainly not an impression I have. The trouble at the old Elm Park when Swansea went there back in the 90’s was the worst hooliganism that I’ve ever witnessed at a football match. [Post edited 17 Apr 2022 12:07]

I was referring to Reading in the ‘70s and ‘80s in my original post, and did say that today, it’s a pleasant place to visit. No disrespect, but don’t you contradict yourself in your post?

I always viewed these clubs as small fry as a younger man, never really felt any intimidation and always seemed to be places that really didn’t register regards problematic.

Exactly To me Reading is just a sign on the M4 and when I see it I think "oh yeah...Reading they have a nice big new railway station" and then totally forget about the place until the next time I pass that sign on the M4 Funny old world

| Reading v Swansea City : Sky Bet Championship 21/22 UPDATED SUN AM on 09:59 - Apr 18 with 3807 views | cadleigh | Reading is England's largest town and a perennial candidate for city status (they'll probably get it when Charles ascends to the throne). Built their prosperity on a massive abbey with royal patronage (unlike those fools up the Thames with their stupid university!) only to watch it go up in smoke when Henry VIII got bored of monks. Venue for the only battle on British soil in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and the imprisonment of Oscar Wilde. Nice dining quarter and the largest statue of a lion I've ever seen (some people say it's actually modelled on a cat but others insist it is anatomically correct). The locals have an insatiable appetite for demolishing any building more than 5 years old and erecting new ones. Labour council and parliamentary seat in a sea of blue. Embarassingly-branded stadium (but who are we to talk?). Decent shopping mall at The Oracle. While I wouldn't actually recommend going there for a day trip, if you do find yourself in Reading for a football match it is worth a potter about. | |

Always wondered what the Oracle was ( never thought to Ask Google) Another one of life's mysteries solved. Went to the cup match in August and thought it was a tidy stadium, albeit with a silly name. Who does that ...

That's wider urban area though .Isn't Swansea well over 300,000. Ive always though Reading a place to drive out of or away from or to avoid completely.

Not at all. The trouble before, during and after the match was the doing of Swansea fans. As I said been to reading many times and I’ve never see any trouble from their fans. [Post edited 18 Apr 2022 13:52]

Good to see Downes back and it’s clear Martin is still keen to get as many points as he can. After today the next three games are really difficult.
