Looks like the SWP had the balls to turn up at this riot.

Cardiff Riots on 11:02 - May 31 by Gwyn737

Between 2010 and 2021 social worker numbers were decimated by austerity while the population rose. It has become a hell of a hard job without being 24 7

Social workers have no option than work from home as cuts to local authorities have seen many offices sold off. WFH is cheaper.

In 2010 there were 110,000 social workers
In 2022 there were 122,000 social workers
An increase of 12,000 or 10% not a decimation by austerity as you claim

Poll: Sholud Wales rollout vaccination at full speed.

and still not enough I'm afraid , with yet more and more children suffering due to the increase in social, family and medical issues , the need for more to supplement the already stretched services is more than apparent

Another distortion of the facts?

Gwyn’s comment referred to Social Worker numbers during the period 2010 to 2021, his claim that Social Worker numbers were decimated was correct.

In 2010 there were 111,100 Social Workers. Over the course of the following 10/11 years the number of Social Workers dropped significantly and fluctuated between 93,700 at its lowest and 107,500 at its highest.

Only in 2022 (the year you happen to pick and which was not included in Gwyn’s initial post) has the number of Social Workers been higher than it was 13 years ago. I’d say a peak to trough reduction of some 17000 Social Workers or 15.7% is most certainly decimation by austerity.

Same happened with the police.

Hardly a distortion if facts if we are taking about there being more social workers now than there were in 2010. Wonder why he deliberately left out last year? Trying to make a political point.

This time the local residents did not riot. Tragically more of these accidents will happen if children ride bikes they are not able to control.

Not at all. There was a considerble increase in recruitment last year which is of course welcomed.

My point was around austerity which many try and use the pandemic and Ukraine to deflect from. That's why I chose those years, pre-pandemic and war, to show the mass reduction in service (and for many more services).

If you has a pay freeze between 2010 and 2020 then a 10% increase for 2021/22, whold you say your pay has risen by 10% by year? Would you be in the same financial position as 2010?

13 years of Tory rule and nothing realy works. The pandemic and Ukraine have become a handy excuse. It's like when we look at one month/year of growth figures - we came from such a low base it shouyld be easier.

But Gwyn wasn’t, he was talking about the 11 year period between 2010 and 2021 when Social Worker numbers were decimated and the impact of Austerity. You brought up 2022 which was not referred to in Gwyn’s original post. 2022 is the outlier because it’s the only year when SW numbers have been higher than they were 12 years ago, simply because it suited your narrative and distorted reality. Even if numbers were higher last year, they’ve got lot of catching up to do after many many years of cuts.
Be interesting to see if the numbers are higher next year if whether the increase was down to a temporary boost in numbers to address issues arising during the pandemic.

I absolutely agree. It is their job to prevent crime or to investigate and solve crime. These two boys were on an illegal bike, ridingon the roads with no helmets, tax, MOT or insurance.

If these police officers are found culpable of illegally causing those boys deaths then we may as well disband the police and let the scumbags take control.

They’ve not been Charged, they’ve been served Gross Misconduct papers in relation to the incident and there’ll now been an IPCC (or whatever they call themselves these days) investigation.

Can see why it police officers in similar circumstances don’t get involved with bikers.

The bottom line here is if the parent(s) of one of the bikers hadn’t bought the son a bike and if the kid hadn’t rode it illegally on the road this wouldn’t have happened.

Serious accident round my way last night, with an air ambulance required to air lift a child seriously injured after he and his believed motorised scooter collided with a bus child .No way does that come as a surprise to me ,maybe parents will think twice before allowing their child unfettered access to one although I doubt it

A couple of key points.

Two police officers are under investigation for their conduct prior to the death of two boys in an e-bike crash in Cardiff which led to rioting.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said gross misconduct notices had been served on the driver and passenger seen in a police van behind the boys in the Ely area.

Notices don't necessarily mean officers will face disciplinary proceedings.

The two officers have not been suspended.

Incorrect they have not been charged with anything. It is people spreading rumours and lies that caused the riots in the first place.

They only people responsible for the two deaths are the lads themselves. They died as a result of their own reckless behaviour, riding an illegal bike they were not able to control plus of course having no licence or insurance an no compulsory crash helmets. They dies of head injuries.
Also responsible are the feckless parents who bought them the illegal bike in the first place.

You misunderstand
They have been served discipline notices alleging gross negligence
I totally agree with you regarding their tragic deaths which are so unnecessary
Many parents are unfit to nurture a hamster

It is just a technical point as tye police refered themselves to the independent complaints body which is just routine these days.

It’s not, the police officers have been served with notices informing them they are under investigation for gross misconduct and could potentially be sacked.

Despite some people protestations, police officers are amongst the most accountable people in this country. They are subject to the criminal law and to disciplinary processes run by the IOPC and by in force departments such as their Complaints and Discipline Departments. Anyone who thinks people like the IOPC or C&D cover up for the police is tripping.

I've been on multi-agency support update training this morning where those fugures were looked at moire closely.

There we 62.77m people in the UK in 2010 compared to 67.5m in 2022. The ratio of social workers has decreased. That's not even taking into account the increase in child poverty and issues with social care from 2010 to 2019.

Welcomed recruitment in 2021/2 still puts behind the level of support in 2010 and that's without taking into account the incredible increase in demand.
