Martinez I Want Gomez Here For The Long Term

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has revealed his wish to keep highly sought after midfielder Jordi Gomez at the club.

Gomez has been a huge hit at the Liberty Stadium since his arrival last summer and is thought to have attracted the interest of Premiership clubs and SPL outfit Celtic but it has not all been plain sailing for the Spaniard throughout his relatively short career to date.

Times were tough at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys for the 23 year old after falling down the pecking order at the Barcelona club and was subsequently loaned out by then manger Tintín Márquez to Swansea City for £200,000. There is however a new reality facing Barcelona's second club a reality that could have a very significant impact on the short term future of one of the most exiting players in the championship.

One thing is clear in the midst of all the transfer speculation that his time at the club has been classed as pure enjoyment by Martinez , as he told Planet Swans, “Firstly its pure enjoyment we enjoy his football and he has enjoyed his stay whatever happens at the end of the season.”.

“I am sure Swansea city will be a special name for him and he will bring great memories to himself.”

Facing relegation to the second teir of the Spanish domestic game Espanyol's Argentinian boss Mauricio Pochettino could chose to maintain the cultured midfeilder's services to spur the club back into La Liga should they be relegated this season.

Despite these factors Martinez is sternly pragmatic about the Spanish clubs fortunes and how they would impact on any future sale of Gomez, he added “They could get relegated then the whole situation changes they could have an offer of £3-4 million and that obviously is out of our reach and many things could happen.”

“What is the reality is we have two games left to enjoy Jordi in our club. He has to play in the premiership but he wants to do that with Swansea City which is a great sign but Espanyol will have a huge say on that. “

However securing the services of the former Barcelona youth product was seen as a stroke of luck by Martinez who if the club can extend the Spaniards time at the Liberty Stadium is relishing the chance to develop him as a player and has been quick to remind Gomez that only Swansea City took any interest in him last summer as he revealed to Planet Swans, “I did not expect to get Jordi in the summer we were very fortunate and we enjoyed his football after that if we can keep him here in the long term it will be fantastic if not we will keep an eye out on his evolution.”

“What is clear is that 12 months ago only Swansea City showed interest in him and he knows that we would love to keep developing him as a player.”
