Contract Extension For Mark Gower
Contract Extension For Mark Gower

Mark Gower has signed a one year extension at the Liberty Stadium

The extra year for the Swansea City midfielder was revealed in the Evening Post with the player naturally happy to extend his spell to a third year

It may not have been the two years so far that Gower imagined when he signed from Southend but clearly he has done enough to persuade Paulo Sousa that he warrants the extended contract.

"This would have been my last season, although I could have automatically earned another year if I played a certain number of games," Gower told the paper.

"But the chairman pulled me aside in the summer and said he wanted to extend my contract and I signed a new two-year deal in the first few weeks of the season.

"I was delighted. I'll be approaching 33 by the end of the contract but you never know, I might get one last chance of playing in the Premier League

"It's been frustrating for me," he added. "I came off at Scunthorpe with a bad back that kept me out for 10 days, then returned to training and tore my hamstring a couple of days later.

"That put me back to square one fitness-wise, but I have worked hard in training for a month or so and the gaffer has seen that and put me on the bench in the last couple of games.

"I need some game-time, but the boys are doing well so I'll just have to pick minutes up where I can.

"Andrea (Orlandi) has done really well and Joe (Allen) is a good player. Then out wide you've got Cedric (van der Gun), Nathan (Dyer), Tom (Butler) and Cotts (David Cotterill).

"It's difficult to break back in, but I like to think I was playing quite well before I came out of the side and hopefully I can get that form back if I get an opportunity.

"I don't really know what my position is now," Gower admitted.

"I enjoy moving inside and getting on the ball. I'm no spring chicken anymore and these boys out wide have a lot of pace.

"I enjoy giving them the ball as much as I enjoy getting it out there — what really matters is that I'm in the team."
