Rudy awakening as Austin relinquishes captaincy
Thursday, 16th Jan 2014 19:45

Rudy Austin has been stripped of the Leeds United captaincy following a week of discussions post our Hillsborough humiliation.

The 6-0 lunchtime drubbing on Saturday saw the end of Austin's short tenure as captain. Although the Jamaican international was a popular choice for the job back in August, he has been a shadow of his former self in recent weeks as the Whites have slumped to just one win in their last nine and many fans, myself included, feel Rudy doesn't even warrant a place in the starting line-up at the moment.

Don't get me wrong,on his day he is a colossus however it appears the role of skipper was maybe just one step too much for him and I must admit he was not the most vocal of captains' despite his undoubted commitment.

Austin, who was involved in an on-pitch spat with Paddy Kenny during the defeat at Forest at the end of December, will hand the armband over to Ross McCormack prior to the visit of league leaders Leicester City on Saturday.

McCormack said he was "absolutely delighted" to gain the captaincy. He follows a long line of distinguished Scots such as Gary McAllister, Gordon Strachan, Billy Bremner and of course the late Bobby Collins, who passed away earlier this week. Leeds have also confirmed there will be a minutes applause for Collins before kick-off on Saturday.
