Former R's - Kanyuka joins Swindon

Pat Kanyuka has wasted no time in finding a new club, joining League One outfit Swindon a week after being released by QPR.

Big Pat was tipped for great things after coming through the ranks at QPR and made 15 first team appearances last season as the R’s fought off relegation. Most of those starts came at right back but he’s more comfortable in the middle of the defence and should be a valuable asset to Swindon who are currently 11th in League One and beat high flying Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Another former QPR right back has had a less productive week. Bob Malcolm appeared in court in Chesterfield on Friday on a drink driving charge. In the early hours of December 27 the police reportedly received calls from other motorists saying that a Range Rover was parked across the middle and fast lanes of the M1 between Chesterfield and Derby with the driver asleep. One passer by claims he stopped and persuaded Malcolm to move his vehicle to the hard shoulder where the police found him.

Malcolm said that the performance of referee Steve Bratt in QPR’s defeat at Plymouth had frustrated him and he apologised for the incident. That’s all well and good Bob, I went through a six pack of lager with various chasers when I eventually got home after watching that eejit referee as well, difference was my car was parked safely on the drive and locked, and I didn’t have another QPR match to play two days later. The case was adjourned to allow the defence more time to prepare their case, he’s back in front of the magistrates on January 29. Malcolm is currently suspended by Derby County pending the result of the case.

In League One Mick Harford and Warren Neill are back in football as the new management team at Luton Town. They lost their opening game 2-1 at Leyton Orient on Saturday and will do well to arrest the decline of the financially stricken Hatters after the sale of a number of key players this month.

There’s confusion today over the future of former QPR utility man Georges Santos. The Frenchman signed for Conference North side Alfreton just a few weeks ago but has already apparently packed his bags. The Reds found out last week that he was due to move to Conference new boys Farsley Celtic but that deal is yet to be concluded and he is currently unattached. In a strange quirk of fate Alfreton are due to face Farsley in a trophy replay fixture this evening at the Impact Arena however a 2pm pitch inspection is likely to put paid to the game for the third time in ten days – Santos is ineligible to play even if the deal is concluded after featuring for Alfreton in the first match.

Meanwhile striker Dennis Oli is now a permanent Gillingham player after a successful loan spell with the League One club from Grays Athletic. Oli joins for an undisclosed fee with a hefty sell on clause due to Grays should he move on for a transfer fee in the future. Manager Mark Stimson said: “"It is great to get him on a permanent deal because he is at the right age and we feel he'll develop into a fine player.” Oli has scored three goals in eight appearances for the Gills since joining in November.

He is of course part of a little army of ex-QPR players down at Priestfield, with the five former Hoops enjoying/enduring contrasting fortunes with the Gills. Adam Miller was unlucky to see a thirty yard effort crack off the underside of the bar and bounce back into play in a 1-0 home defeat by Northampton at the weekend – given the Cobblers’ propensity to beat QPR every time we face them it should perhaps come as little surprise to see a team so full of old QPR players struggling against them.

Simon Royce started in goal in that match but there was no place in the line up for Steve Lomas who signed for them in the summer but has fallen out of favour under Stimson and is now in dispute with the club who want to pay his contract up and release him.

Stimson told the Kent Messenger: "Deals that have been given out before I came here were too long with too much money and we've got a problem now. We've got players who are sitting on two-year contracts who are not going to shift unless you pay them serious amounts of money.

"In this modern day you have to be able to get around the pitch. Steve Lomas has been a fantastic football player. He played over 40 times for his country but I feel at the moment his legs are not what I'm looking for. We've tried to speak to him on a few occasions to try and do a settlement but he's not entertaining that at the moment. That's disappointing because we haven't gone light on it, we've been really on the mark where you would expect to get paid off, but we have to get on with it."

Hamid Barr, one of Ian Holloway’s less successful signings as Rangers manager, has been snapped up by Conference South side Lewes after bagging 14 goals in 18 starts for Tonbridge Angels this season. Barr made one appearance during his brief time with QPR, in a 3-0 defeat at Yeovil in the LDV Vans Trophy.
