Saints And Bournemouth Chase Sheffield United Youngster
Wednesday, 20th Jan 2016 09:05

According to the latest media rumour, Saints are about to go head to head with AFC Bournemouth for a Sheffield United youngster.

The player in question is Che Adams who ironically made his debut for the Blades in their win over Saints in the Capital One Cup last season, coming on as a second half substitute.

Adams who will turn 20 in the summer has continued his development at Bramall Lane, if not at a breakneck pace, gradually which is sometimes the best way. Playing either as a forward or attacking midfielder he is a raw talent.

This season though he has blossomed under ex Saints manager Nigel Adkins and although he cannot match the scoring record of another former St Mary's man who has hit 13 goals in 25(1) appearances, Adams has a very respectable 6 League One goals in 13(4) games to be second in the list of Sheff Utd goalscorers.

Adams did not come up through the youth ranks though, after leaving Coventry City's academy he joined Ilkeston and starred for them in the non league game in 2013/14 season with a rumoured 45 scouts watching him at one game alone.

It was Sheffield United who got him though and now he is being linked with a £1.75 million move to the Premier.

Saints would hope that they have the edge over the Cherries in that Nigel Adkins has recently been welcomed back into the fold at St Mary's when the club invited him to a game recently and he spoke glowingly of the club, despite his disgraceful treatment from former Saints Chairman Nicola Cortese, who not only sacked him, but barely acknowledged the fact, not to mention failing to give him the credit he deserved for leading Saints to two straight promotions.

If Adams does join Saints then he would be highly unlikely to be in immediate contention for the first team squad, whereas as at Bournemouth he would be, however Saints could sweeten the deal by perhaps loaning him back to Sheffield United for the remainder of the season.

Am I the only one who thinks that Saints' progression might have been smoother, and more 'under the radar', if Adkins had stayed. MoPo did well with us but he proved extremely disruptive once the inevitable Cortese departure happened. Pointless to speculate of course but I have just done so anyway...

After seeing some of his cup performances he looks one for the future. Can only see him coming in if the club think Gallagher and Seager aren't going to make it though.
