Match Preview: Leeds United v Blackburn Rovers - Elland Road the stage for EFL Cup tie
Monday, 19th Sep 2016 17:48 by Lucas Monk

Leeds United host Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Cup third round tomorrow night.

Leeds United head into tomorrow's tie after a 2-0 victory at Cardiff lifted them up to 15th place in the Championship table. Blackburn, who Leeds incidentally defeated 2-1 just last Tuesday, also come into the game off the back of a victory; Rovers won 4-2 at home to Rotherham to move one place up to 23rd in the table.

Team News

Leeds - Gaetano Berardi should still be out. Tyler Denton and Liam Bridcutt are likely to start as are Alex Mowatt and Swansea loanee Matt Grimes.

Blackburn - Rovers are hoping to secure the services of free agent Wes Brown in time for the tie. Owen Coyle has already made an admission regarding his team selection, saying that he'll make 'wholesale changes'. David Raya will start in goal, with Elliot Bennett and Connor Mahoney likely to feature also. Danny Graham, Charlie Mulgrew, and Elliot Ward will all be absent through injury, whilst Anthony Stokes is a doubt.

Match Facts

The two sides will meet in this competition whilst in the same division for the first time since November 1995, when both were competing in the Premier League. Leeds won 2-1 en-route to reaching the final.

Only Brighton (eight) have scored more goals in this season's EFL Cup than Blackburn (seven).

Leeds have won six of their last seven League Cup matches at home. The odd one out, a 5-1 quarter-final defeat by Chelsea in 2012.

Writer's View

After back-to-back victories in the league, tomorrow night's came presents opportunities to all involved. An opportunity for both managers to observe some of the more sporadic first-teamers within their respective squads. An opportunity for both sets of fans to do the same. And finally, an opportunity for the players selected to make an impression and attempt to fight their way back into their manager's plans.

Despite this competition often being maligned by swathes of observers, tomorrow night's game does bear significance. No, it is not a must-win for either side, but what it is is another chance to gather momentum via victory, which for us, would be a third successive win on the spin in all competitions. I look forward to the game; I'm an advocate of squad rotation, I believe that managers need to reach out to everybody in the squad and distribute playing time fairly as to keep spirits up, and I look forward to seeing what the likes of Denton and Mowatt can produce tomorrow night.

With both sides set to make a plethora of changes, the end result is difficult to predict. I'm not one who allows sentiment to cloud his judgement, but I'm feeling confident of another victory. I'm of the opinion that we have better quality auxiliary players than Blackburn, and whilst I feel it'll be close, that will see us through into the hat for the next round.

Prediction: Leeds United 1-0 Blackburn Rovers
