Leeds United: Whites on threshold of signing Premier League attacker

United are closing in on a Premier League striker...

Leeds United are in 'advanced talks' to complete the signing of West Bromwich Albion striker Tyler Roberts, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Leeds are hopeful of concluding the deal before tomorrow's 11pm transfer deadline following West Bromwich's signing of England forward Daniel Sturridge on loan from Liverpool. Having bolstered his attacking options, Albion manager Alan Pardew is prepared to allow Roberts, whose contract expires upon the conclusion of the current season, to leave the Hawthorns for pastures new.

Roberts had recently returned to the Hawthorns from a loan spell with Walsall of League One, in which he scored five goals in 17 league matches, and was expected to appear for the Baggies during the second half of the Premier League season.

Leeds appear to have beaten off stern competition for the player's signature, with Rangers and an array of French teams having been credited with an interest in Roberts, 19, as recently as last week. He is likely to undergo a medical examination tomorrow with United reputedly having acceded to a fee of £2,500,000, though this could rise to £4,500,000 in future.

In addition to his spell with Walsall, Roberts also enjoyed loan stints with Oxford United and Shrewsbury Town last season, making 27 league appearances and accruing invaluable first-team experience. He has also represented Wales internationally at under-21 level.
