The Whites' newly installed head coach suffered a painful defeat to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in his first match in charge...

Leeds United head coach Paul Heckingbottom has had his say on yesterday's disappointing defeat in a crucial Yorkshire derby away to Sheffield United.

Chris Wilder's Blades emerged as deserved 2-1 victors over the Whites owing to Billy Sharp's brace.

The result means that Leeds are 11th in the table - eight points off the play-offs - and still seeking a first win since their 2-1 success away to Burton Albion on Boxing Day.

Speaking to LUTV after the match, Heckingbottom offered his thoughts on the game.

“I would’ve liked to have got something out of the game,” the 40-year-old said.

“We were on the back foot after the first two minutes, Sheffield United, especially at home, are one of the best teams in the league at building momentum.

“They play forward and gained territory down the sides with throw-ins, they got into crossing areas, put the ball in the box and scored, which put us on the back foot.

“We had to change that at half time, they continually played forwards and we continually turned round and invited pressure, in the second half we played forwards more, were on the front foot and created more chances as a consequence.

“It was disappointing how we started the game, sometimes you concede goals and teams cut you open, but it was a hustle and bustle type goal, they gained territory and put the ball in the box.

“I’ve not seen the penalty decision back, but the lads are upset in the dressing room which makes me think it is harsh, but I might watch it back and feel differently.

“If we have the energy that we had in the second half, we will be okay, but I don’t want to just rely on moments of quality.

“We have quality in the team, but at times we may have to grind out a result.

“We may have to go in front, know how to defend and play on the counter or go in front and then keep scoring goals because of the pressure that we can create, it is all about adding different things to our game," he concluded.

Heckingbottom takes charge of his new team at Elland Road for the first time next Sunday, when 6th-placed Bristol City visit West Yorkshire (4:30pm).
