According to Sky Sports, Leeds United have confirmed erstwhile Argentina boss Marcelo Bielsa as the club's new head coach.

BIelsa, 62, signed a two-year contract with the club last night, and will become the highest paid manager in United's history - with his annual salary said to exceed £2,000,000. There is also the option of a third year.

Leeds had been pursuing the Argentine for a month after resolving to part company with former head coach Paul Heckingbottom, who departed following a mere 16 matches in the role.

Angus Kinnear, United's managing director, overtly stated the club's desire to recruit a more experienced head coach ahead of the forthcoming season, and the capture of Bielsa is consonant with his remarks.

Bielsa will arrive at Elland Road with appreciable prestige to his name. He has coached myriad high-profile clubs including Athletic Bilbao and Marseille in addition to his native Argentina and Chile at international level.

Moreover, the 62-year-old is held in good repute by many of his contemporaries, and was once described by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as being "the best coach in the world".

He is renowned for favouring a distinctive brand of football that is both dynamic and fast-paced, as well as being possession-orientated, and he has typically deployed a unique 3-3-1-3 formation throughout his career.

His fastidious playing style demands much of the players he has at his disposal, and it will be most intriguing to see if he can implement it in a gruelling Championship season that will see United contest no fewer than 46 matches.
