Leeds complete goalkeeper coup Thursday, 8th Aug 2019 11:38 by @LucasMonk99 Leeds United have completed their first signing of transfer deadline day. French goalkeeper Ilan Meslier has moved to Elland Road on a season-long loan from FC Lorient. Meslier, 19, broke into Lorient's first team last season and made 30 appearances in all competitions and kept 11 clean sheets. The 6 ft 6 shot-stopper's impressive performances helped Les Merlus to a finish of sixth in Ligue 2, and he later represented his nation in the under-20 FIFA World Cup earlier this year. Anterior to this he had discussed a potential move to AS Monaco, and attracted further interest from Chelsea, making this deal something of a coup for United. Leeds, who have the option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season, appear to have signed a direct replacement for Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who joined Burnley last week for a fee of £2,500,000. Meslier will now compete with Kiko Casilla for the first-team goalkeeping berth, and could well make his debut in Tuesday's Carabao Cup clash away to Salford City. Speculation abounds that Arsenal's England under-21 forward Eddie Nketiah will follow the Frenchman into Elland Road in another season-long loan deal, which would take Leeds's number of domestic loans up to five. Teams are only allowed that number in a matchday squad, but Meslier's transfer does not count toward this limit.
