Au Revior Meslier!? Saturday, 29th Mar 2025 19:14 by Mark Monk Its hard to know where to begin after today's 2-2 draw with Swansea at ER today, so I'll start with the obvious, Ilan Meslier surely has to be dropped after his latest horror show. After a moving tribute to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of Kevin Speight and Chris Loftus, Leeds had the perfect start against the 17th placed Swans. Jayden Bogle stormed down the right, picked out Joel Piroe who tried twice to turn the ball home but Brendan Aaronsen nipped in with just 35 seconds on the clock. But for Willy Gnonto's injury, Aaronsen might not have started. Another surprise inclusion in the starting line up was Ethan Ampadu, back from a lengthy injury lay off at the expense of Ao Tanaka. Junior Firpo also dropped to the bench having played for the Dominican Republic twice, Sam Byram stepping up at left back Leeds were fired a warning that things weren't going to go their own way despite their dream start. Joe Rodon was adjudged to have felled former Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O'Brien in the box. If there was contact it was minimal, but Meslier guessed right and dived to his left to beat away Josh Tymons weak penalty. On 25 minutes the fans turned their backs on the game, another tribute to the two fans killed in Istanbul replicating the protest made by the travelling Leeds supporters on that dreadful night. Then came another heart in the mouth moment when, Tymons free kick was headed into Meslier's arms by Ben Cabangos flick on via the post. Leeds looked leggy and lethargic and the gamble to play Ampadu looked to have backfired when he was booked by referee Ben Toner on 33. Despite their woeful start, Swansea grew in confidence and Leeds would have been happier at hearing the half time whistle. Both the team and crowd attempted to raise the flatness as the second half began. Former Swan Dan James was the most instrumental as Leeds attacked the favoured Kop End. Going close with a curler, James then teed up Piroe on the volley who saw his drive saved by Lawrence Vigouroux. Then on 64 minutes, Meslier's world came crashing down again Just moments after saving a blistering volley he dropped the resulting corner at the feet of Harry Darling and the visitors were level. Having withdrawn Ampadu for Tanaka, at least it sparked Daniel Farke into making some subs. On 86 minutes it looked like he'd pulled off a masterstroke when Gnonto on for James lashed home our second after Vigouroux parried Struiks header from Joe Rothwells corner. Leeds were in front and went back to the top of the live table. They looked comfortable enough to see out the seven minutes of added time added on mainly due to Swansea's time wasting between the 64th and 82nd minute. But on 96, they were level and Meslier again was questioned after Zan Viponiks long range drive skimmed past him into the net. The French keeper was booed at the end as the Leeds players thanked the fans. The Swansea players and their caretaker boss Alan Sheehan, a former Leeds player celebrated wildly with the 700 or so travelling fans from South Wales. Despite losing their last two, Shehan won't have done his prospects of getting the job on a full time basis no harm whatsoever. The question on most Leeds fans lips are how much longer can we stick with Meslier? Like at Sunderland and Hull he has cost us all three points again. Clearly he doesn't inspire confidence in the defence particularly with Joe Rodon. If he'd have conceded the penalty and the volley before his first howler then it wouldn't be so bad but today summed him up perfectly at his imperfect worse.
