Southampton Lining Up January Move For Premier League Goalkeeper
Monday, 15th Dec 2025 21:26

According to media reports Saints are looking to sign a keeper in the January window, although Gavin Bazunu has not done too much wrong, the club are concerned that they are not strong enough in this department.

givemesport.com are reporting that Southampton are going to make a move for Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson.

The 25 year old played a major part in Sunderland's promotion season, missing just 4 games through injury in the regular season and then playing in all 3 play off games to help the Black Cats into the Premier League.

His reward though was not a chance in the top flight, but to be back up to Robin Roefs who was signed from Dutch club Nijmegen and he has so far been ever present.

Newcastle born Patterson has been at Sunderland since a youth and has great experience in the Championship having wracked up 133 appearances, he has also played in League one for Sunderland also a season on loan at Notts County in the National League.

All in all he has approaching 175 games in all competitions for both clubs, a decent total for a keeper who is still only 25.

His current value is around £10 million, but it believed that Saints will be looking initially for a loan deal.

How many shots has he faced and how many of those has he saved? That's all we need to know

Forgive me for being pedantic but HTF is Patterson a "Premier League" Goal Keeper if he has 133 games in the Championship, a few in League 1 and some in the National League with Notts County? Given those stats, Baz is streets ahead, not that I rate G.B. particularly highly. I don't doubt Patterson might be a decent stopper, but deeded not up to the standard of the premier league by his own club. Let's not forget Sunderland's defence was much better than ours in 22-23 (as proven by their Premier League start apposed to ours last season) and I suspect Gav's stats are overall much better. Probably being signed as a better option to McCarthy as back up.

If they sign Patterson, will Saints sell Baz or MacCarthy?

Are we forgetting Ramsdale?

I wasn't aware the Newcastle loan had a commitment to buy. He doesn't seem to be doing that well so he'll probably be back on the books next year.

Certainly replacing McCarthy is going to need to happen at some point.

I am not sure that its just playing matches to assess who is a better keeper, based on which division he played those matches in. The key measure is clean sheets isn't it?
From the 2020/21 year.
Bazunu 209 matches 42 clean sheets = 20%
McCarthy 86 matches 20 clean sheets = 23%
Patterson 179 matches 56 clean sheets = 31%

Yes, McCarthy played more EPL games but as they say, you can only play against the opposition that you are given.
So based on that basic stat, Patterson would be a significant improvement on our current keepers

Ramsdale is playing matches for Newcastle currently. Its highly unlikely that he'll come back to us. Certainly no chance if we're in the Championship.

Even if he's not PL quality he'd a better Championship keeper than Teffers Bazunu and Aimless McCarthy.

Bazunu has played 55 championship games, conceded 74 goals and kept 16 clean sheets. McCarthy has played 85 conceding 105 and keeping 25 clean sheets. Patterson has played 133 conceding 145 keeping 41 clean sheets.

Bazunu concedes 1.35 per game, and keeps a clean sheet every 3.4 games
McCarthy concedes 1.24 per game and keeps a clean sheet every 3.4 games
Patterson concedes 1.09 goals a game and keeps a clean sheet every 3.2 games.

Evidently Patterson is better than both current keepers and if you look at number of goals in games where a goal has been conceded is way ahead

Bazunu 1.9 goals per game
McCarthy 1.75 gpg
Patterson 1.56 gpg

In all senses stats suggest Bazunu is worst
