Hungry players the recipe for League One success!
Hungry players the recipe for League One success!

Simon Grayson knows a thing or two about getting out of League One and he spelt out his key ingredients this weekend.

In the Yorkshire Evening Post, Grayson who guided Blackpool out of League One in 2007 spelt out both quality and hunger as being key elements in the battle for promotion.

Grayson has so far made just one addition to his squad as he prepares for his first full-season in charge at ER. Early last week, Northampton defender Jason Crowe agreed to move north.

A few eyebrows were raised at the signing of Crowe, who was part of a Northampton team relegated to League Two last season and who turns 31 in September - however Grayson argues that Crowe is a "hungry" player and that is the sort of quality Leeds will need if we are to go up third-time lucky.

We want players of a certain quality but I need to see hunger as well - a desire to play for us and to be successful with us," he said.

"Players need to look after themselves and I do accept that, but if they're only looking for money or to be able to say that they play for Leeds United then we're not interested.

"The players who are here already have shown me real commitment and anyone who comes in has to fit into that ethos. Along with quality, it's what gets you out of this division."

There is no doubting Grayson's mantra on commitment, following the high-profile slip-up at Hereford in the winter, Leeds went on an amazing run which alas did not quite carry us through to Wembley.

I like Grayson and think we stand a reasonable job in getting promotion under his stewardship, however there is that nagging doubt that he will be working under a tight-budget, Crowe arrived on a free in the week that Huddersfield paid 250k for a striker. Jonathan Douglas and Fraser Richardson have both left with the club unwilling to offer them new-deals (personally I'm not too fussed about Richardson but Douglas will be missed) and it seems likely that Leeds will cash in on Jermaine Beckford and maybe Fabian Delph.
