James to the rescue as Leeds avoid Hatters humiliation
Saturday, 5th Apr 2025 17:54

Daniel James rescued a point at Luton today but Leeds slip into the play off places as Burnley go top winning at Coventry.

As well as the high profile deselection of calamity keeper Illan Meslier, Karl Darlow coming in. Daniel Farke brought in Junior Firpo, Willie Gnonto and Ao Tanaka. Sam Byram and Brendan Aaronsen dropped to the bench, which also included long term absentees Patrick Bamford and Max Wober. Joe Rothwell missed out with a calf strain and Mateo Joseph didn't play due to illness.

An impeccably observed minutes applause was held before kick off and on the 25th minute to mark the murders of Kevin Speight and Chris Loftus. But United fell behind on the 15th minute to a classic sucker punch.

Firpo had already tested Kaminski in the Luton goal from a free kick. Then Manor Solomon broke and the Hatters broke, fighting to avoid a double drop relegation they aggressively broke free, Tanaka uncharacteristically bullied off the ball, Adebayor eased past Rodon and delivered the perfect cross for Izzy Jones to put Luton in front. Jones was totally unmarked on the right and there was nothing Darlow could do about it

News then filtered through of Burnley equalising at Coventry, Jaydyn Anthony a former Leeds loanee who like many barely featured last season under Farke, scoring for the Clarets.

But 13 minutes later Leeds were level thanks to Daniel James 12th of the season. The winger has looked jaded of late but given space on the edge of the box he lashed home a precision drive giving Leeds hope and a platform to go on and win.

But once again, we just couldn't break a so called inferior team down. We might have nicked something late on but for Solomon failing to connect with James's perfect cross, but we failed to take three points from opponents who like the two sides who now occupy the automatic places were in the Premier League last season.

Burnley grabbed a win at Coventry and took top slot. Sheffield United lost at Oxford, where Leeds head on Good Friday.

Then there was the worrying sight of Pascal Struijk limping off before the final whistle and re-emerging to thank the fans with an ice pack on his right foot.

I honestly thought we might get a rare away Saturday lunchtime win here given Farke had a precious week with the players, not to mention more options given the injury situation improving but once again it was well below par and its now just one win in six for us.

The Blunts slipping up at Oxford is only a minor filip as they host Millwall on Tuesday night whilst we travel to Middlesbrough, in the hunt for a play off places. Burnley meanwhile go to Derby and despite the Rams improving in recent weeks and slipping back into the relegation zone after defeat at Swansea today, I can't see them doing us any favours especially us!

So by Tuesday night we could be four behind the Blunts and five behind Burnley, yes I know they've got to play each other but seeing as we were five and seven points ahead of them just a few weeks ago this is unacceptable and somehow Farke and Farke alone has to lift the gloom, defeatist attitude and resignation to the play-offs...and we all know what happens there!
