The HGPL Round 30 (of 37), Saturday 15:00 deadline 00:29 - Mar 2 with 1474 views | Barsidepete | *MFB_CUFC made the most of a tough fixture list, collecting 6 points, tops for the weekend along with myself... MFB did that on the strength of Bristol City 2-1 Gillingham (also tipped by THRILLSEEKER, still in the mix for the Prem title, and RSCOSWORTH, with a valuable 5 points to keep D1 playoff hopes afloat)... *My 6 points were collected via three outcomes and Burnley 2-0 Derby spot on, that one predicted by THENET and BLUE4U2 as well)... no other results nicked by PLers past week, outcomes at best, meaning 5 points tallied the hard route, except for RSCO, as noted above, one by one gathered, five 1-pointers from COOMSTER, GSY163, OHORIORI, and THENET... The HGPL Round 30 (of 37), Saturday 15:00 deadline on 10:33 - Mar 3 with 1025 views | noah4x4 | Anybody like a bet.....? A salutary thought just struck me after reading today's HGPL table... Thrill-Seeker has caught me as regards having 27 x 'all correct scores' (e.g. three pointers). Gate16 and TheNet are also close on 26. However, I have a current total points advantage of an additional 27 points over Thrill-seeker (12 over Gate16); which must reflect me having found 27 additional correct 'results' (e.g. at one point). That's a good advantage; but the purpose of this comment isn't to crow about that. It's simply an observation about typical betting odds and greedy bookmakers... To date in the HGPL; this hence gives me a grand total of 54 correctly predicted 'results' (with half also being correct scores) from having played 210 matches; which is a 'correct result' ratio of 25.7% and 12.8% for correct scores. In the context of the HGPL, that does sound like an astonishingly good ratio; but I do carefully study the 'form' books as any good betting man should perhaps do (n.b. what a sad life I lead -it's called retirement!) . But the serious question is; what would be my financial status had I been playing this game 'for real' at (say) William Hill and not merely 'for fun' in the HGPL? For gambling addicts; one that deserves analysis; and the HGPL provides a statistically significant set of data. If I was a betting man (and fortunately I am not); the bookmakers odds for predicting mere individual 'results' (e.g. for a win/draw/loss) are so poor that I would now be bucket loads out of pocket having FAILED to predict a 'result' on 156 occasions out of 210 (74.2%). If you then do the maths as regards the marginally higher odds available for correct scores and my prediction success ratio there of 12.8%' then I would still be vastly out of pocket. In combination; it is a betting disaster. It's evident that what we FAIL to predict correctly has most impact on our wallets. So if the HGPL proves nothing else; it does show that the bookie will ALWAYS win; unless one gets really lucky with a multiple all correct score accumulator (such as an 8/8 all correct results W/D/L forecast). Betting on INDIVIDUAL games always means that one will ultimately lose over time; as this sample of 210 matches and 27 players (hence 5,670 total player predictions) proves. Betting on football is clearly a mugs game! I do hope that nobody has been following my predictions at the bookies (or their own); and we all play the predictions game only for fun. Appreciate your insight, Noah, but you're discounting one major variable. Fixtures are not selected to be easily sussed. I mean, how many times have I placed a large accumulator and missed out on a payday missing one... Perhaps in season 12 we could integrate a poll certain weeks and see what ties PLers want to predict? Literally, the chosen fixtures (Moyes reference, haha:D .. A good punter can weave past the hassle .. I believe the HGPL often reflects matchups no relatively sane hopeful would place dosh on unless they were certain because of long-supporting interests or some otherwise inexplicable intuition. I believe this is one of the most difficult PL's you will find. Those who come out on top truly earn it. | |
