At the start of the summer, I'd have said £7m for a player as good as JDG was a no-brainer. It would chafe not to get a discount having paid to loan him for two years, but that's our own fault if nothing was agreed.
Given our needs at other positions now, it's almost certainly too much money for us to spend on a position we're (relatively) strong in. Ideally we'd still get him, but it looks like the priorities for the club are the centre and left of defence, plus attack.
It doesn't help that he seemingly wanted to wait for better offers, but I don't think that would stop us signing him if his position was a priority. |  |

There's the problem. We've got a number of options now, although I'd personally prefer JdG over JJS or Ki. As a 'complete' midfielder, comfortable in a more defence role, more attacking or an old-fashioned box-to-box player, JdG is better than anyone we have now imo. And far above the previous summer where we must have finished the window in profit, given we had £27m in for Rodgers, Allen and Sinclair.
I know the TV money has gone up but so has the wage structure and most importantly, we will be continuing to invest in the club's infrastructure.
I would also suggest we didn't seem to have any spare funds last January despite there being obvious problems in the squad that needed fixing. Maybe we have learned a lesson there and are keen to put ourselves in a position where we could make a decent signing if needed. | | | |

Sorry, buy I don't see any real strength in depth in midfield, and believe £7million is a fair - nay attractive - price for JDG given his known worth to the team.

It's a defensive player the midfield needs, and De Guzman isn't that. We have Shelvey and Ki who will play the more central role that De Guzman would fill. £7m is a fair price for JDG though I agree and I'd have preferred to move Ki on and replace him with JDG but that doesn't look like an option now.
As for the spend, I'm expecting us to spend £7-£8m replacing Chico, and a further £7-£8m on a defensive midfielder and full back. That's £15m out, and I'd be surprised if our net spend to date was less than £5m, seeing as we've done such poor business on outgoing players. If we get to the start of September and haven't spent decent money on bringing in a DM, full back and CB I'll concede things are a lot tighter than I thought. | | | |

I think we need a defensively minded midfielder more than we need JDG who is not good in that position.
I like JDG but given that we seem to be keeping Ki, he would not be my priority at this point. Siggy is a better playmaker than him (in my opinion) and we have cover in that position as well with Emnes. With Shelvey & Ki as the 'middle' one of the three (plus possibly Fulton) then I think we need a back up / real challenge to Britton rather than another 'utility' midfielder, however good they may be. | | | |

I would rather spend the money on a cb CDM and RB. 7 million is just too much, that 7 million would bring in a highly rated player from Napoli to fill a position that needs to be filled. If we bring in JDG then we have 3 players to fill 1 position and would still need to get a cb, RB and CDM. Doesn't make sense.
Looks to me that we were going to keep loaning JDG until he runs out of contract so that villareal get their loan fees and don't have to pay and we would get him. But now another team has become interested JDG is looking at his options. Swansea couldn't wait for him to make a decision and still need to keep looking at other midfielders so that if he did choose another club, we wouldn't be left with no other options. | | | |
