It's forty years today since the greatest goal in televised history was scored at Bloomfield Road. Take a bow, Micky Walsh.

Icon? It's all Rio Ferdinand's fault.

Robbie, yes you're right Burridge saved it.
God my memory.
The bulk of that Sunderland team were the players that beat Leeds in the FA Cup Final?
Or is my memory playing tricks again?

There were five or six still in that Sunderland side from what I remember - Montgomery and Kerr, obviously, and maybe Malone, Pitt, Halom and Hughes perhaps?

Your memory is far superior to mine ribble.
I take it Porterfield, Watson and Tueart had left by then?

Pretty sure, Rusty. Tueart went within a year of the 73 final, I remember that much. Porterfield may have gone even sooner than that.

Sunderland'a run to the '73 final was epic ; replays, late goals and they beat some good teams, didn't they ? I haven't checked, but I seem to remember their run to the final wasn't all that easy.

This was when the FA Cup really meant something, of course ; far more than finishing 4th i the League anyway.

Icon? It's all Rio Ferdinand's fault.

Arsenal in the semi's and Man City in an earlier round. Then, of course, the mighty Leeds in the final. Some achievement considering Sunderland were bottom end of Division 2 at the time.

I heard they've got footwear problems, at Gloomer's.

A spokesman today said, "a couple of r soles need replacing "

Nice one giro, too right about a couple of R soles running the roost over Bloomers.
