Is The Guardian 'paper' struggling? on 12:08 - Feb 2 by Clinton
The guardian loses shed loads of money and is supported by a Trust, but it can't go on too long like this. It can be excessively PC at times even a bit silly. The strength of the guardian is that it sticks up for minorities, you may take the p1ss out of it but but if you are ever on the wrong side of a genuine injustice it would stick up for you when a lot of the gutter press wouldn't touch you
A Trust of course based in a tax haven.
There no hypocrite like a left wing hypocrite.

The problem lies with the need to sell, papers tend to go more for sensationalism and the need to be first to print something, regardless of its accuracy, skewing most articles with their political/social leanings, rather than spend time being proper journalists and researching and double checking before going to print. This is not just the Guardian, but all media. I long for an almost autistic style of reporting, facts without the spin, but never going to get it.
And Warwick, have to throw Laurie Penny in there, although hesitate to lump her in as a journalist. Loved the way Starkey took her to task on her bullshit here......

I fecking love that video, thanks.
A quick rundown;
- They are debating cultural identity, what it is to be British.
- She makes an unprovoked personal attack on Starkey, labeling him a racist and a xenophobe
- He ignores her insult and continues to make a point re: the topic
- She then interjects to quiz him on his tax affairs (insinuating that he is avoiding paying UK taxes)
- He then denies this and let's the audience in on a little secret that exposes this silly little girl's utter hypocrisy...before aggressively stating that he has "come from the bottom" (this is true) and won't be lectured by some "silly little public school girl!" (Also true. Like all good Guardian writers...and Labour Party movers & shakers these days... she has had an extremely privileged upbringing, a spoiled little rich girl)
- the audience applauds
- she then plays the "I'm hurt, I didn't come here to be attacked" card while claiming he is not telling the truth
- He states that he has the e-mails which prove that he is telling the truth
- After a little sit and a think she obviously concludes 'oh f*ck, if this gets picked up as a story somewhere in the media there IS proof out there actually...hmmmm, what to do'
- She then comes up with the most pathetic excuse you could think of to explain it away and frames this excuse in the context of her being the victim under attack to try and garner sympathy
- members of the audience shout out "you started it!" etc.

Thanks for explaining it.
I was getting it confused with Last Year at Marienbad at one point.

Seem to recall Penny wrote an article about her experiences when working as a burlesque dancer ( allegedly ) - apparently fair chunks of it were plagiarised.
Still, she is a successful writer with books, magazine gigs. Just as well that you too can help get a team around her so she can write what she really wants...
Problem I have with the Guardian these days, perchie, is the news to opinion ratio is out of whack.
Even then, their columnists are just bizarre in their utterings. Like when Toynbee claimed the number of people dying in hospitals in Wales wasn't an endemic issue, it was because Wales has no hospices, so people die in hospitals rather than there... quite a few people put her right on that one.
I can heartily recommend this twitter account, by the way. Well worth read.
The Guardian has not helped itself by constant bashing 52% of the population that voted Brexit. Your losing a few paying customers on that issue alone.
Even when you know, you never know?

Yes but they are all idiots and did not know what they were doing.
The Guardian contributors and readers consider themselves above such people.

Probably not, because I can't imagine shed-loads of Brexiteers read the Guardian in the first place.

By the same token The Guardian's default stance probably hasn't helped retain the readership of the older generation of 'thinking' Socialists who's opposition to the EU was principled, at least.
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

A sound point, I concede.

Owen Jones should be drinking cider, riding his BMX and fingering girls behind the bike sheds and not writing adolescent guff for a serious national newspaper.
He's not, he's writing it for the Guardian.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I wonder if he has ever ventured into the German franchise known as Lidl's?.. I know people from London are scared to eat from such establishments.. I have had a nibble and drink at from both.. Lidl's has some uknowm gems.. waitrose churns out the same old garbage..
I'm surprised perchie hasn't put up his list of Friday delights yet.
As for the Guardian.. a newspaper full of agenda and hypocrisy.. just like every newspaper known to man.
The Dr's of 'real' journalism have simply given up with the new processed breed of incumbents taking their roles..
A bit like all you oldies running down the young bloods of this country.. screaming.. only if I was 40 years younger..

Basically takes headlines from the ace columnists and mocks them.
There are countless similar spoof Twitter accounts for pretty much every major newspaper. As for the Guardian, your view of it will naturally depend on your leanings. If you don't lean to the liberal left then you'll hate it. Which is why pretty much everyone on here hates it. All newspapers reek of agenda and rank hypocrisy as Skippy has pointed out. The Guardian is no different in that respect.

Indeed, ECB. You do have to admit though that regardless of political leanings, the Guardian has a higher ratio of "up own arse" columnist article headings than other papers.
