BBC2 used to show subtitled films on Saturday nights in the 70s; the French were the most reliable providers, but even Eastern European producers thought they should cheer the comrades up by getting a few out. My parents used to come back from a night's dancing and wonder why I was muttering to myself in Hungarian.
