1. Ante Rajkovic. By a distance the best I've seen. And you wouldn't want to spill his pint.
2. Ashley Williams.
3. Skywalker.

3. Mike Johnson
4. Mel Nurse

Mike Johnson? I used to stand below the double decker near a guy who bellowed, "Come in, number 5" every few minutes, every game.

For those of you who are too young to have a clue what I'm talking about it was a reference to the numbered boats on Singleton Lake which you hired for thirty minutes and had to return when the guy renting them out shouted out the mumber of your boat.

I don't know about best players but the ones I enjoyed watching most were:

Ante (brilliant)
Fede (class)
Chico (fun)
Irwin (our first really expensive player, as I recall)

I only saw Mel Charles once but he looked a bit of a player. Ashley was good for us but I couldn't take to him somehow. Speedy always looked too worried for me to have full confidence.

Ha,

There used to be a bloke who also stood below the double decker who used to shout “GET HIM OFF” when anyone gave the ball away, every time, all game. On one occasion someone shouted to him “You’ve taken 10 players off and we’ve only got the ‘keeper left”. That was after about 20 minutes of the first half.

BEST EVER SWANS CENTRE BACKS on 09:40 - Apr 28 by WarwickHunt

Ver few, if any, saw probably the best two centre halves in our history - Tom Kiley and Mel Charles so it’s a tough one.

So, in relatively recent memory

Ante
Mel Nurse
Fernandez
Ash

My father took me down the Vetch for the first time when I was 4 against Bury, we won 5 -3. I don't remember the game that much, but this was season 1955/56 when we should have been promoted to the 1st Division 25 years before Tosh!!

Tom Kiley got injured and as is our history decided not to look for a tidy replacement outside the squad, but decided to try out Jim Pressdee (Glamorgan), Dudley Peake and too late in the season give Mel Nurse his debut.

Tom Kiley's injury was sadly the beginning of the end of his Swans career. My father put Tom's leg in plaster and knew his career was fvcked, and he never forgave the Swans board for not signing a replacement.

Mel Charles like his big brother John was very versatile across the back, playing left/right half, centre half and centre forward, and scored a few hat tricks and a 4 goals in a match for the Swans.

We were blessed with some cracking centre halves in the 1950's as has already been mentioned ... Roy Paul, Tom Kiley, Mel Charles and Ray Daniel, just to name a few.
