And just to add Mr Boom, If say we pipped Man U at the end of the season by one point to a champions league place, would all the trappings that the CL would bring, free Shane Long of his (in yours and others eyes) 'excessive' transfer fee? As his goals yesterday would be a crucial part in winning a place...it could very well happen ;) |

Not sure this reasoning is relevant - Despite Bale playing for us early in his career, he was still excellent for us. I don't remember seeing a player at the age he was then, receiving the ball and just running at and past players, making a b-line for goal. Also, if we won a free kick with site of goal, it was almost like having Le Tiss take them, he was superb at his young age. All this and he wasn't even part of a particularly great Saints side. Mark Dennis played in probably my favourite Saints team that I've had the pleasure to watch, and he was an excellent part of it but his temperament did let him down, he would be a bit liable to miss important games through being suspended. David Peach was an excellent left back and also a superb penalty taker, so he has to be up there. |

Totally disagree with this. At the end of last season, I was discussing with a friend how Saints could do with a Shane Long in the team, an annoying little wasp of a player who chips in with his fair share of goals. Always rated him, so was delighted when we signed him - also couldn't give a f**k at how much he cost as we play in the fantasy league known as the 'Premiere', and as far as I'm aware, no representatives from SFC paid a visit to my abode and asked me to chip in with the fee for SL, I very much doubt that they asked any of you lot either or anybody else that wails like a baby girl about the fee?
As far as I remember, we appeared to be very cash rich during the summer and apparently we tried twice to sign SL before the final offer was accepted, so I would imagine we were keen to sign him. |

Bison, Dune has stated correctly. The 'IS' are living out medieval propaganda. Christians would be entitled to act the same according to medieval Christian propaganda. As much as I'm a humanist and feel the urge to help the oppressed in these shitty medieval countries, bombing them is only spurring these bell-ends on. My nature as the person I am, will tell me to go and help the oppressed people in these war-torn areas, but if you go, then a beheading you can expect if captured. I'm sure the beheaded knew the risk. As an atheist and a humanist I'm pretty sure that bombing the f**k out of them is only encouraging Islam in the week of mind. Anybody else have some sort of sensible answer? |

Good for him, he is getting on a bit. He only believes in a 'minimal god' though and definitely no sky garden, so agrees with there ;) He's shown no scientific evidence though Arthur, that's obvious or it would be world breaking news. Maybe in his old age he's decided that we aren't ever going to figure this one out and has taken the leap of faith. Also, I did mention that my post was probably a bit brutal, I was angry at the time. I don't like the term 'atheist' either - it was coined by religious folk to label non-believers. Which is simply what I am, unless you can convince me otherwise.. |

I'm not a biologist so I'm not going to attempt to argue the finer points with you. The complexities of life are truly remarkable and again, it's extremely difficult for our minds to perceive those complexities but to dismiss evolution so as to believe in a creator is to give up on learning and progression. I myself believe that the science behind the creation of life itself will be discovered in my lifetime. These findings will not effect religion though as it will reinvent itself as it always does to suit it's current period in time.
I've no doubt that science is not even in its infancy to explain the whys and wherefores of everything but it's a factual journey of exploration that I will be walking down, and not as you would think because I want it to take me further and further away from religion but it will anyway. |

On reflection RB, I realise that my post last night was a bit brutal. I didn't mean to offend people with faith. Having read through this thread yesterday I couldn't help the anger welling up. For people without faith - religious extremists committing vile crimes against other people becomes very difficult to live with, without spouting off in frustration at ideals that frankly appear ridiculous in this time. Why would you assume that I 'bury my head in the sand'? Because I choose not to believe in outdated texts and argue with others that my imaginary friend is better than their imaginary friend? I do empathise with those who choose to have faith and live a law abiding life. Life is tough, it must be comforting to believe that with all it's tests of our character, if you live it with faith, all will come good. So that you don't have to make assumptions about me, I'll let you know why I have no faith. I'm a naturally curios person I guess and being told that 'something is something just because it is' doesn't cut it for me. Even as a young kid I remember wondering why my nan or my parents or my siblings went about their everyday lives without wandering about the bigger picture when it fascinated me. I've a curiosity with religion and have read about the different beliefs but I also read plenty on science and this is what I will continue to do. Mentioning that Newton and Einstein were religious types means nothing as does that Stalin was an atheist, I'm not sure what you're point is here? Are you just trying to reassure yourself that your faith is justified? Evolution - that's always going to be a massive sticking point for you isn't it. You probably find it difficult to even utter the name 'Darwin' let alone read his theory of it, although you should, it's completely logical, I know as humans it's difficult for us to perceive the passing of millions of years of the stuff but other than that, it's fairly straightforward. I'm very open minded RB and would love for you to convince me you're right, but our blind faith wouldn't make it a case in fact would it. |

All religion is for f*cktards. I appreciate that our eventual death is irritating, but believing that we will one day exist in a wispy-wafty-floaty sky garden re-united with everyone we ever knew and loved simply doesn't make it true.
Secular governments the world over will hopefully one day be the norm, and that will be secular governed countries that aren't "Christian countries" as the deluded Cameron would like to believe.
Atheism is THE ONLY way forward - you heard it here first.
On a lighter note, I've just made up a joke that I think is reasonable.
Q: Name a 1960's burka clad pop duo that would rather sing about religion than 'I got you babe'.

How did you come to the conclusion that Dobermann' are arseholes? I've only owned two dogs in my lifetime thus far, a Dobermann and a Golden Retriever. Of the two breeds, for me, the Dobermann was my preference. In my experience they have all the qualities of a top pet - easy to train, very loving (to all family members and also visitors), not yappy (as barry suggests) but do like to bark at unusual external noice and anything they find as strange behaviour (which is obviously a great attribute for home protection), They enjoy being a house dog and will generaly sleep at your feet and except thier home bounderies but once outside in the open they are full of fun.
I would also say that the Retriever has all of the same qualities but alongside the Dobermann it would appear as thick as a cart load. Both lovely dogs but as the thread is about the 'coolest' then the Dobermann wins and therfore wins the debate - end of.
Although, as Tim appears to know a lot about dogs then I except his agument and I also agree that Labs are fab, but just not as 'cool' as Dobermann's ;) |

After the summer that Saints have had, I've come to the conclusion that premier league players are actually just prostitutes, with their pimps (or agents as they like to be known) farming them out to the highest bidders. If the likes of Shaw had been left to his own devices and thought logically for just one minute about his career, he would have come to the conclusion that he'd be better off staying at Saints for a bit longer, but sadly this is where we've ended up. Cortese was definitely a strange little man but I fully appreciated his loathing of the pimps. [Post edited 15 Aug 2014 0:26]

In reply to the subject of the thread - I would say that the average fan on the street (not internet forums) is not expecting too much this season. If we can stabilise and finish lower mid table to kick on next season, I would take that. I don't think anybody is expecting much from the Liverpool game but West Brom at home could be an early indicator of how things might pan out. I think Koeman is the right man for the job at the moment and I don't see what sacking him would do to help after all that has gone on this summer. Unless of coarse that by Christmas we are starting to get cut adrift at the bottom and Tony Pulis offers to step in and work the same miracle that he did at Palace last season. |
