AFC Fylde Match Thread
at 19:43 12 Oct 2024

Agree that the first half was a bit dull but we were in control apart from the odd dangerous attack from AFC. Special mention for Robson today who made a stunning save towards the end of the half from a powerful header low down to his left. There were some brilliant performances throughout the team today and a number of candidates for MOM but agree the new guy was a contender, he had a great debut.

Looking forward to the game. Proper FA Cup tie for me. They will be fired up after last weeks drubbing of Aldershot and with a new manager to impress. We will have a decent and hopefully vocal away following with the players up for it after being frustrated at Ebbsfleet. Add in the National Leagues top scorers in Houghton (11) and Mitchell(9) and we have the recipe for a great game. Hopefully we can keep the mistakes to a minimum and progress into the first round proper in what appears a far tougher game now than when the draw was made.

Almost 500 tickets currently sold for our trip to AFC Fylde.
However, unless Fylde increase our seating allocation there are now only 8 seats left.
Apart from those the remaining available tickets are for south paddock standing only.

Bumps in the road
at 13:02 6 Oct 2024

After a dozen or so games we have made a solid enough start. Top seven, third best defensive record and in the top four when it comes to goals scored. However, there are inevitably bumps in the road and to
lose EEL, Gilmour, Rodney and McNicholas for extended periods is a big challenge for the mana
ger and the rest of the squad. To continue at our current performance level after those damaging setbacks is I think unlikely. Henderson plus our young talent, as they already have,
will once again need to step up to the plate. For us however, realism needs to kick in and we must recognise that there will inevitably be setbacks over the next weeks. A top seven finish without a
number of our experienced key players for this reletively new young squad would be a fantastic achievement. Hopefully those who criticise at the first setback come to recognise the fact and cut both the manager and his young players some slack. Fingers crossed we make the playoffs in our first season under the Ogdens but if we dont I for one will not be critical because I know everyone in this new regime will have done there best trying despite the bumps along the way.

Apologies to Fylde. I have been reliably informed that following numerous complaints the pitch surround issues have now been addressed this season. Not before time !!

The low rail pitch surround that caused Jez (and a couple of other players from other clubs) to be injured last season has not been improved since. Its a serious accident waiting to happen, hopefully not to any of our guys this time.

A stinker...you must be joking it is the next best thing to a home game and a good following guaranteed.
Granted its a National League team but its one in crisis which I agree brings with it risks but what were you expecting.

TODAY V BRAINTREE TOWN

Again, its not defending our style of play but a trawl around the forums of many of our rivals in this league show that their fans are equally frustrated with the slow sideways backwards approach that many teams are now adopting. The difference is we are sitting in fourth place and many of them are not. It was interesting to read Hartlepool supporters comments after our win there. They were lambasting the manager for his 'old fashioned' direct approach and pointing to the way we played as the style and approach that they should be adopting.

In contrast its also interesting to read some more recent comments from the manager of our next opposition:
Watling has urged his Ebbsfleet players to take the handbrake off.
Too many passes went backwards and sideways and the Fleet boss insisted that isn’t the intention. “My big thing is, do you play at the back or do you play from the back?”
“We have played at the back far too much. I want my centre-halves to step into the pitch and serve the midfielders, I want the midfielders to face forwards, I want the forwards to score goals".
I think we all agree with those sentiments and hope that JM is of the same mind. Fingers crossed Ebbsfleet players were not listening at least for this Saturday.

The highlights clearly show Gilmour between two defenders demanding the ball from the keeper. He subsequently turns with the ball and for reasons known only to himself decides to double back to goal getting caught and losing the ball. To blame the keeper entirely is in my opinion a little harsh.

Tough game today. Solihull no mugs based on last seasons efforts. Have seen them twice this season and they tend to sit tight and play on the break. Also skilled in the dark arts particularly killing time at every opportunity. Patience needed from the crowd and plenty of encouragement. No reason we cant win but not expecting us to roll over them. UPTD.

We need to take the chances our play deserves. If we do not put games to bed when we are as dominant as we have been for periods recently we will always be caught out. Our style of play and lack of pace on the two sides of our back three makes us vulnerable to the long ball/or a midfield mistake particularly if the opposition have a pacey striker. Not scoring when its easier to hit the target than miss completely has been happening far to often recently and is hindering the progress we have been making. I bet Robbie is tearing his hair out with frustration at the moment.

How are we not losing this game.. we are dreadful.
We are lightweight in midfield losing out on most tackles and despite being a team of midgets we seem to be incapable of keeping the ball on the deck. Graham is absolutely hopeless and O'Connell looks as if he is totally pissed off with the chaos surrounding him.
All this after we score so early makes it all feel even worse... changes needed now Robbie !!
