Thanks. Good to see. Hope the current heavy snow showers don't amount to much.

At the time of writing, they were posting about matchday guides and even food availability in the Ratcliffe. I guessing they wouldn't put that on unless confident of going ahead.

Potential threat from the weather to Saturday's match

This is the real issue. Communication from the club. Lack of communication creates a vacuum into which all manner of hypotheses are allowed to flourish.

Another -5c morning and as someone who's walked the dog for 40 mins, its obvious all grass surfaces are frozen solid.

The sun will help a little today, but at least 80% of the pitch doesn't see much if any this time of year.

If everything is in hand and under control, then why not post something on social media saying as such. On the other hand, if Saturdays match is in any doubt whatsoever, then post something along those lines. A bit of honesty about a situation we can all see would help.

God help any pub management in town if the match gets pulled at 10.30 Saturday morning, when there's a few hundred half cut travelling fans. They'll have fun trying to shift that lot out into the pouring rain.

Edit - a quick check on X/Facebook etc just now, and all posts suggest all going ahead as expected πŸ‘

Potential threat from the weather to Saturday's match
at 12:05 20 Nov 2024

3 days away, but could there be a threat to the Oldham match on Saturday? It got to -4c last night and with 3 more sub zero nights to come, including Friday night, the grass will be getting a little solid.

I addition to that a potent low pressure system swings in early on Saturday with the possibility of a couple of hours snow before it all turns very wet. A Met Office warning is out for that. Even if there's not much in the way of snow, a lot of rain falling onto frozen or semi frozen ground isn't going to drain away that fast.

To add to that, there's increasing likelihood of snow overnight Thurs/Fri, and amounts will possibly be more than we had Mon/Tue. Anything that falls will hang around all Friday as the temps will just get above freezing.

Fingers crossed it doesn't play out like that, but potential problems are there. Hopefully they are being dealt with.

Can anyone tell me when the turnstiles to the Sandy shut? Couple of us running late due to transport issues. Might be 3.30 before we get there.

Saturday V Wealdstone - what do you think?
at 13:05 19 Jan 2024

I'll be amazed if its not on. Temperatures won't go below freezing now for at least a week and the snow and ice are melting fast in todays sun. It has been cold but it hasn't been THAT cold over the last 5 days, so the covers will have prevented most deep frozen ground. The way I think of it is this. If I took a pack of frozen meat out of the freezer now and popped it in the fridge, there's no doubt that by this time tomorrow it'd be well defrosted. I'm sure the pitch will be the same 🀞

There shouldn't be any problems with the match being on tonight. Had 1/2 inch of rain here today after 3 mostly dry days. Considering the pitch played fine on Saturday after we'd had almost 3 times that amount the couple of days before, I think it'll be reet.

A bit of a weather nerd reply, but there will be no issue with the weather for tomorrow. I have a weather station about a mile from the COA and its not been that wet today. There have been far wetter run ups to other matches that required no inspection. It has been a grim day but not a particularly wet one.

Taurus and the Sandy/Wilbutts gate

Standing at the left hand corner of the Sandy tonight, it's clear that things have changed for the better at the gate. There's even a radio. If someone has read this thread and made those changes, thank you.

Taurus and the Sandy/Wilbutts gate
at 09:57 23 Aug 2023

On Saturday, for what was a fairly insignificant reason, in the first half of the match I needed the assistance of a Taurus steward. I waited until half time and went down to chat to the steward manning the Sandy/Wilbutts corner gate.

Unfortunately I made the stupid assumption that this steward, as he's looking after a main access point/emergency exit, would be of such a high standing that he'd easily sort out my minor problem. How wrong was I.

After I'd asked for him help, he looked at me in such a blank way, it was if one of us had just landed from Mars. This chap could neither understand nor speak a word of English. That's right, the steward Taurus has chosen to man an exit that hundreds of fans would have to pass through in an emergency, couldn't speak or understand English. If, God forbid, someone had a heart attack or similar at that end of the stand, he's the steward you're going to run to for help. The 30 seconds lost in trying explain to him what's going on could be the difference between life and death.

This isn't a dig at the stewards, it's a question why Taurus management would choose to put a particular steward in that particular role. He didn't even carry a radio. The nearest radio carrying Taurean could be found near the kiosk. Imagine if there was an emergency, trying to relay messages to the far end of the Sandy stand when the only radios are at the opposite end.

It's likely that those radio carriers are free to roam so this might not be an accurate portrayal of most of the match. However, it still doesn't look good. Thankfully my minor issue was sorted perfectly well at the end of the game.

While I'm at it, can anybody explain why that corner gate is now always shut? I know it's a couple of years since it was always open at the end of the match but it was so handy. I can understand if there's a huge away following and the powers that be see it as a possible place for trouble to flare up, but with 70 travelling fans last Saturday, surely it's time to consider occasionally opening it up again.

Bars Feedback & Match Day Operations
at 20:24 15 Mar 2023

Thanks for the great communication on this every week. Is either the Dale Bar or the Ratcliffe open throughout after half time? There's been a fair few folk in there well into the 2nd half in recent matches. From my own point of view it helps to convince me to get a half time pint if I know I'm not getting turfed out after 2nd half kick off. Its handy when the queues at the bar can mean many don't get served until 5 to 10 minutes into half time.

Absolutely agree. Those 3 in the middle with a rotation of 2 of Rod/Quigs/Hendo up front would work well.

Two different halves again, but that can be partly forgiven by the virtue of being 2 up. Overall a performance from a team that can, if it wants, stay in the football league. Not entirely sure that the defensive set up for the last 30 mins was the way to go but it worked today. Even our much maligned captain turned up today. Unfortunately, the weakest link seems to be Jimmy K. Again, he's not what he used to be. Get a ball winner to compliment Brierley and who knows where the next 2 months takes us.

The best half of football we've played in quite a while. Very tidy on the ball, good control through midfield especially with the vision of Brierley and on the odd occasion the defence were called upon they did their job. 2 great team goals and a fantastic save at the end by O'Donnell from an unexpected shot. Can we actually play 2 halves this way? Let's see.

On a positive note the sun is trying to show itself and there are bits of blue sky to be seen. That wind is also drying things out pretty quickly. No rain for a good hour too. Fingers crossed Γ°ΕΈΒ€ΕΎ

Yeah we've had nearly 100mm of rain in the past week here. To put that into perspective that's not far off the average for the whole month. Again credit to the money spent and effort from the groundstaff on the pitch if today goes ahead. This month has been a proper test of what the pitch can cope with.

With a bit of luck the match should be on today. If the pitch was playable yesterday the the overnight rain shouldn't have caused any problems. We've had about half an inch of rain here in Norden since midnight and none has been particularly heavy. More like constant moderate rain the pitch drainage should deal with. Looks like there's a bit more rain to come but again none too heavy.

If things do go ahead today then credit to the work done to the pitch in the last couple of years. This match, and indeed last week's match, wouldn't have stood a chance of being played a few years ago.

Northampton Town (a) Match Thread
at 18:53 17 Sep 2022

The 17th September is surely too early to be concerned about where the team is going to be come the end of April but this is definitely a worrying time.

As others have stated over previous weeks, I think there is enough talent in this squad to put a team on the pitch that matches most league 2 opponents. The problem seems to be that mentally these players are gone and that takes a fair bit of time and good management to pull it round.

Where is the Rochdale spirit of a couple of years (and a couple of managers) ago? Even if we didn't turn up in a game against a lower league team we always did seem to have a scrap with the those in the top 6. Rewind to March 2020 and the 3-1 win against promotion chasing Rotherham. The last match before lockdown. Great result and not totally unexpected because we still had that about us back then even though we were relegation potential. Fast forward to the past week and two matches against two top teams and you see nothing like it. Very little effort or fight and no expectation to do any better than the final results show. Worrying times.

If we can't muster a fight against the top teams then it's definitely time we turned up when we play those in the lower half of the league, something we haven't really done for years. This has to start next Saturday at Colchester otherwise we'll be up a pretty crappy creek with no obvious method of propulsion.
