Southampton V Leicester City The FA Cup Preview
at 14:56:39

Given the congestion in the Championship table and so many clubs' potential for the playoff spots, I wouldn't be surprised to see everyone in our division passing on the FA Cup.

Southampton At Leicester City The Verdict

Agreed entirely, Bowlercow. How a club can go from EPL champions to League One fodder (if not winding up) is beyond me. There has to be better stewardship of clubs' finances and the stability of the Football League.

Southampton At Leicester City The Verdict
at 16:00:56

We _had_ to break the Leicester Curse, and we did! Foxes, though, are on the brink, and I can't let this flying feeling pass without also acknowledging their dire situation. Hopefully someone helps get that great club financially stable. It wasn't all that long ago that we were in the same position, and to have _two_ Championship clubs now facing administration is a bad look for our league.

Are Saints Arguably Stronger At The End Of The Transfer Window Than They Were At The Start
at 18:46:36

Can't say definitively—especially on the back of one encouraging result at Stoke—whether we're better. For the moment, it does feel as if we've sculpted down the side to a promising essence. But a telling parable was on display last night in the Prem, as a resurgent Sunderland dismantled a stagnant Burnley on Wearside. Recall a mere seven months ago that the latter breezed through the Championship to share the title with Leeds, whereas the former had to navigate the playoffs to get promoted. But now the difference is as clear as night and day. Sunderland have a stylish squad who will fight for each other and get results. Burnley, on the other hand, have a gang of also-rans—two of whom, Armando Broja and JWP, were arguably among the best to wear our shirt over the past five or so years. Pretenders to the Championship title should take note: To get where they are, Sunderland have out-scouted, out-imagined, and out-spent the other two ascendants from the 2024-2025 Championship. They are playing a very different kind of football than they were a year ago. Anyone with similar ambitions must look in that mirror. Are Saints anywhere near comparable level to succeed in the Prem? No. Can we reinvent ourselves to do so once again? Maybe. But it will take a very different side than the ones we've fielded in the past five years, and hopefully this transfer window lays a new foundation that can eventually compete at a higher standard.

Southampton At Stoke City The Verdict
at 18:37:10

A slew of unfamiliar but really welcome thoughts came to mind watching this one:
-- Stoke were physical, but also allowed us acres of space. We ran them ragged!
-- Two world-class saves from Peretz, but our shape and diligence in defense meant he was rarely troubled and we kept the clean sheet.
-- Maybe it's addition by subtraction after all: Azaz, Downes, Charles, Stewart, etc. all looked freed up with Armstrong and Archer left out of the squad.
-- Lots of candidates for MOTM, but for me THB was both solid in defense, excellent on the ball, and a regular menace in attack. Hopefully we can prioritize building the squad around him, and must keep him as long as we can.
Hopefully we've got some traction now and can move up the table. Keep this up and maybe playoff places aren't out of the question; we're now 3 wins off the top six and 4 losses out of the relegation zone. COYR!

Southampton Linked With No One In Final Days Of Transfer Window

While I agree that we could do with a smaller squad, we've also learnt over the years that the moment you stop showing ambition you're flirting with relegation. We should be prioritizing a new center back and/or forward, some kind of shot in the arm along these lines—especially if THB and AA go.

Southampton At Portsmouth The Verdict

We played with improved spirit; would that we could always register so highly in the blood-and-guts department! But it has to translate into goals, and aside from Scienza, of course, it didn't.

It's felt as if our best players have been playing bit parts for much of the past two months. One wonders where this is going. But one thing is clear: the body language on and off the pitch says it all.

All four goals entailed defenders losing their marks and leaving them in acres of space. It was the greatest advert yet that a back three doesn't suit us.

We need more predictability at the back and less predictability in the attacking end. A 4-4-2 can provide this presently.

Southampton At Oxford United The Preview
at 14:20:11

Back in my school days, when our football team lacked talent and ability at all positions, we always placed the paciest guy at forward because, even though he too wasn't all that good, he could at least race past everybody into space, and sooner or later he'd score. This worked a charm—when he finally learned to finish. I'm hoping that Archer can be that man, proving that any player with pace in space is dangerous.

Each week i think that Coventry are due for some regression to the mean, but each week they buck that trend. I don't know how they do it. This week they're contending with an influenza outbreak, so that may affect the outcome. Tomorrow's result may well augur the future of both clubs.

Southampton At Millwall The Verdict

I'll use my own arthritic fingers to echo underwestand's own in pointing out that Millwall looked every bit the part of the sides we'll need to beat to enter the playoff places. Much credit should be due them for our wake-up call. We lost, but we this defeat should remind us of how far we've come and how far we've yet to go.

Tonda Eckert Hits The Top Spot In Bookies Favourites List

Can't see Marsch leaving Canada MNT with a World Cup (which of course they're hosting) on the horizon. The fact that we can think of it suggests a thin field getting thinner. I wonder that, if we don't act now, we'll only have Eckert—which mightn't be a bad thing, as we've time because we're not going up this year.

Southampton V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict
at 17:58:04

This is a longshot, but would Gary Monk be worth a mention? He's dropped down the managerial rungs of late, having last worked at U's. But I once thought kinda highly of him, when he was at Swansea. He played for us, and has coached with James Beattie, who'd be nice to have around as well. But this may be neither here nor there, the ramblings of one who's weary of the coaching merry-go-round and grasping at straws.
