"Danny Rohl left Saints in the summer of 2019, so he was only at the club for around half the 2018/19 season after Hasenhuttl arrived in December 2018. We finished 16th that season.
In 2019/20 after his departure we finished 11th."
With him as manager, Sheffield Wednesday finished 20th and are currently 14th and falling.
To call his record mediocre would be bordering on flattery. If we want to finish in the bottom half of the Championship, he's our man. I notice that the current Championship leaders' approach was somewhat different. They appointed a manager who'd won the Championship.
No, Sport Republic's recruitment doesn't seem to be about building a winning team; it's more about recruiting youngsters for their potential resale value. Meanwhile, any random bunch of 11 players can take to the pitch. Having cheap 'squad fillers' like Smallbone to make up the numbers suits them.
The parachute payments + transfer fees from player sales = job done.
It all seems to be going downhill at Sheffield Wednesday now.
Leeds got a manager who'd won the Championship because they want to win it; we're getting one who's finished in the bottom half of it. Everything points to us putting together a mediocre team and manager to do no more than just survive in the Championship. The lack of ambition at the club nowadays stinks.
And that attitude is why we won't win the Championship. Accept a bunch of mediocre players because they are 'good enough' for the Championship rather than putting together a team that is better than the rest of the Championship and is going all out to win it. Our standards have fallen too low.
Smallbone won't be good enough. Having players like him is why we come nowhere near winning the Championship. Every time he comes on, you know we ae going to concede the midfield and a couple of goals to the opposition.
This attitude that it's OK to hang on to mediocre players like Smallbone and McCarthy for as long as they want to stay here is the reason why this club has gone backwards.
Every time a Villa player threw himself down, he got a free-kick. The ref didn't award us a single free-kick in the first half. I guess once the officials know you are already relegated they no longer feel any need to treat you fairly.
Villa have always been one of the worst teams for the 'dark arts'. Players rolling on the ground clutching their faces when nobody has even touched them, really annoys me, and Villa players love doing that.
I thought the same when Smallbone came on. We were inevitably going to concede a couple of goals. We nearly always do when he comes on. We really need to get rid of him.
He was our best attacking player today and he worked hard and ran more than the other players so why is that annoying? Cameron Archer was annoying. He might as well not have been there and so was Onuachu who couldn't be bothered to run for anything.
The Championship is a very inferior league nowadays, almost totally devoid of talent. If a young player is any good he's already in a Premier League academy. For players at the other end of their careers, they can make more money in the Middle East and North America than they can from dropping into the Championship.
There used to be a time when a top flight team only needed 12 good players, but now they need at least twice that number, leaving none for the Championship.
Yes, you have to wonder, has the standard of the Championship ever been lower than it is now? It's a league that's been stripped bare of all talent. Even the Turkish Super Lig is probably stronger than it for the first time ever.
I guess it's because football is such a big squad game now and so many substitutes are needed that any player who's half-decent gets hoovered up by top flight teams.
It was a tremendous performance. One of those great European nights. I was amazed when, after the second one went in, the commentator said Declan Rice had never scored from a direct free-kick before, in more than 370 games. What a game to do it in: twice!
Saka is so important for Arsenal. Let's hope he's fit to play in Madrid. They're going to need him.
Cameron Archer is worse and even less likely to score many goals for us next season. We're going to be stuck with him, as I can't see Sport Republic spending money on a new striker. I don't suppose we could get Rômulo from Göztepe. He's better than anyone we've got.
