They were generational talents. In my time only Gough and Caddick come close but not for the length of time Anderson and Broad. We were blessed and are now seeing the void they leave.
I was struggling to see any other candidates and hope that the additional responsibility might 'focus his mind' a bit more. But anyway what do I know about cricket, I don't even like golf!
At least Jacks has got a hundred in each innings! Although in reality he has been set up to fail and It is not his fault, as he is not a frontline red ball spinner. At best he is a sixth option in the white ball game.
Stokes being unable to bowl again has left three seamers. Australia played off Archer and made hay against the rest, although Carse has been slightly more accurate this innings. With Lyon locking down at end going at 2.5 an over they can rotate the seamers and build pressure. We have not been able to maintain any pressure.as the bowlers have been milked on what is a flat deck.
Ashes series away seem to be the end of a cycle and serious questions need to be asked. Is Stokes capable of playing the all rounder role? I am not sure his body can cope anymore and it is not through the want of trying. Who is going to bat at three? What is happening with the spinner? What happens next with the seamers outside of Archer? I suspect that it will be the end for Wood as well.
My two pennies:
- Give Brook the captaincy. - Give Bethell the summer at three and get him working on the bowling. He could be a servicable part time option. - Rew the elder becomes the next cab off the rank in the middle order and he can keep if Smith's form continues to wain. - Haines and McKinney are opening options if we move on from Crawley or Duckett, who has also had a barren spell of late. - Ahmed needs game time and I would look for him to slot in at seven, which allows four seamers to play. In the UK it is rare that a spinner has a massive impact so a combination of him, backed up by a few overs of Bethell and Root should be okay. - The much vaunted seam attack has not been great. Archer is your spearhead and Atkinson is probably a good second choice, especially in English conditions. Carse/Tongue/? who are your stable of younger options? Get the seamers bowling in the championship early season and see who is bowling well. Cook is too slow on flat international wickets. I would give Potts another go as he is durable and usually accurate and can fill the 'hard yards' role.
The company who runs it have admitted that the fault was they used the stump mike at the bowlers' end rather than the batsman's end, which is why it did not line up.
Mark Wood has a central contract for the year and I suspect will never play for England again after bowling 10 overs. Bairstow was also contracted last year and played no games. Good money if you can get it.
Bashir is without a county and got 0 for plenty in the Lions v Australia A game and also has a central contract. I wonder if Tom Moody would fancy the job?
I was discussing at work whether we should be looking to bloody Rehan Ahmed as the all rounder replacement for Stokes. He could bat at 7 and be a decent 'outside of the sub continent' spinner.
I would also look at playing Potts next test. He can perform the accurate donkey work role, that currently we do not have. Carse/Stokes and Atkinson have been too erratic with their line and length.
Poor first half. Not created enough and pay the penalty for a poor pass into midfield by the keeper. Should bring Pritchard and Barlow on as soon as possible.
Our change bowlers - Carse and Stokes are bowlers of (occasional) great balls, rather than great bowlers and therefore tend not to be the most economical. Jacks is obviously not really that trusted with the ball and is a hedge your bets selection at 8.
Let's see if Archer and Atkinson can get the ball to talk under the floodlights.
Business was taken care of. On another day we could have scored 4. Pretty much dominated the game and probably could have gone up a few gears if needed. A nervous moment seeing Gilmour down.
Berger had another good cameo towards the end, but Allarakhia was a constant threat. Games like today suit him as he had little to do defensively.
But what is 'too nice'? I've not seen players pull out of tackles and we have certainly recieved bookings for hauling players down when they have been breaking. What we wont do is adopt shithouse tactics and deliberately look to hurt players.
