There was a moment in the first half where Walsh played it long to Smyth on the break and he challenged for the header, then sprinted on to challenge for the loose ball and win us a throw deep in their half. That's why he's effective, because he challenges defenders, he chases things down, he puts people under pressure - he also works bloody hard getting up and down the flank to protect his full back btw. Not forgetting the odd goal and assist. You need players like Smyth in your team, that's why he's popular with his teammates and every coach we've had. Not only was that an absolute stonewall penalty, but the ref let them get away with a few fouls on him. Including the multiple fouls in one down by the corner flag. Then the one where the guy had him in a headlock and Smyth lashed out. As for Coventry, I haven't seen enough of them to judge but going on yesterday's performance if all they have are long throws and fouls then I hope they blow it. |

Agree with this re Bennie. I'm not sure what people are expecting of him, he's a 19 year-old who'd only played a handful of games in the A League before we signed him a and has spent his time with us on the bench and playing odd minutes here and there in a variety of positions. Of course he's not the finished article, of course he's going to make mistakes, but he's also shown positive signs. The guy wants to play, he wants to get involved, and he backs himself - I like those traits in a young player. |

Benham took full control in 2012, but he'd been heavily involved since 2005-ish, so it wasn't immediate success. Also, your assessment of QPR fans has 'some' merit but is overly harsh and diminishes 3 decades (give or take) of being a top flight club that regularly beat the biggest clubs in the country. |

The reason Brentford were able to do that for a sustained period of time was that they were coming at it from a very low position. No Brentford fan had seen a decent team at Griffin Park since the 1950s and, following Ron Noades' time in charge, the 5,000 or so fans they had were mostly happy just to have a team to watch. That gave them an awful lot of leeway to sell and re-invest. QPR on the other hand, pretty much going back to Chris Wright's disastrous ownership, have continually been caught between making long term decisions and wanting to win immediately. |

Agree with this, Brighton caught us cold in the first minute, then we picked up a little but they hit us on the break for the second. Took the wind out of our sails. Second half was much better, we put them under pressure and pushed them onto the back foot, we passed the ball better and we created a few chances. Hassan bullied two defenders out of the way before shooting high and wide, and Adjetey-Brew whipped in a couple of excellent free kicks. Brighton reportedly focus on recruiting GKs and the kid playing here looked good. Definitely some potential in our team but, as ever, people need to hold tight on their expectations. These kids are a long way from making an impact on the first team. It also re-emphasised the lunacy of using 16 year olds as subs in the cup game v Plymouth. |

I don't think that's true. The on-field performances are only part of what's been discussed on this thread, there are lots of other issues being raised. |

A few people have mentioned the need for improved comms but I think it's a bit more fundamental than that. He's shown himself to be somewhat economical with the truth and, once you have that tag, it's hard to shake. So, yes, improved comms would be good - and I think it's both accurate and fair to say he's done some good, some not so good and some highly questionable things at QPR - but that question of trust isn't going away. |

Maden's turn around from last season's displays is credit worthy, he deserves huge respect for it, but he's not playing in the PL. He's not a good enough footballer to sign for one of the footballing teams, and he's not athletic or physical enough for the more industrial teams. [Post edited 21 Jan 17:25]

The cause of the 'anger' (if that's the word we're going with) seems pretty clear to me. QPR fans have been remarkably patient and understanding over the past five years - most of which has been unrelenting dog doodoo on the pitch. We understand the finances, we know we blew the budget under Warburton, we know we had to re-align after that, we understand we're signing a different profile of player now, we've put up with the ridiculous streaks. But there will always a limit to that patience, it's just human nature. Add to that the up and down nature of our performances, the fact we were playing an Oxford team that is L1 standard, and that for the first time in years we've been in and around the play offs - albeit largely because the Championship this season is the lowest standard I can remember - and I think it's all coming to a head. There was a home game earlier this season, I can't remember who against, that came on the back of some terrible performances. We started poorly and the crowd was beginning to turn. Luckily, the team turned it around and we won. I actually think the team (and coach) needs a performance this weekend against Wrexham to prevent things spiralling. |

Well, they've borrowed £125 million to build their new stand, which will apparently cost £200 million. That means they need to find something like £75 million from somewhere else. |

I'd sell Dembele in a heartbeat. He's about to turn 23 and still plays like a teenager who's never been coached - something of a threat when running with the ball at feet, but no idea how to play within a team structure or how to defend. Add in the physical deficiencies and he's shown no sign whatsoever of being capable of playing in the Championship. Field is different, but I admit I'm biased and would have him in the starting XI every week. The only reason I'd even consider selling him is if he was asking for a move, and even then I'd be very reticent, especially if Varane is off now or in the summer. |

We actually tried it twice, in the 30s and 60s, but crowds fluctuated wildly without ever settling high enough to justify the cost. Good job the directors at the time kept hold of Loftus Rd. On the outside of the pitch was an athletics track, greyhound track and a concrete cycling track - and at one end there was also a swimming pool - before you got to the stands. Would have needed binoculars. [Post edited 12 Jan 14:25]

I guess the benefit of doing this with an Australian club is that it avoids any problems the next time we qualify for Europe. |

I was a bit surprised that we dropped deeper almost as soon as we'd scored, they looked ropey as hell when we put them under pressure, but I guess Stephan knew how short we were on legs. That was the real difference today, they had more options on the bench than we did and we, halfway through the season, still aren't fit enough. Can't do much about the former, given our recent burst of injuries, but the latter is absolutely something we should not accept. Changes need to be made behind the scenes on that score. Still, it would be churlish to criticise the players and coaches today, they gave it a shot. You can't ask for much more than that. |

I was about to say "he's Jake Bidwell but with injuries". Definite no from me. |

Edwards can and will play every week, whereas those guys - at best - would only play occasionally as part of their development. Two different scenarios. |
 | Forum Reply | January transfer rumours at 10:33 6 Jan 2026
Hmm. His positioning is poor (Dunne corrects him), his body shape often wrong when he faces an advancing player and he lunges into challenges far too often. He gets away with these things because his pace allows him to recover from mistakes. I think people like him because he's all-action, throws himself into challenges and likes to get forward in attack. We might not find anyone better this January, but he's not a solution to our very long-running RB problem. |

Yes, I've noticed that too. With the added insinuation that the people criticising his sacking are only doing so because he was passing them information. I keep making the comparison with the Paladini regime, but the parallels are stark. I've had more than enough of it. |

Clubs like QPR need people like Furlong - they know the place inside out, they are respected by fans and players, they carry with them the history of the club and of previous teams. All of that is important, otherwise you're just another blank slate, another 'project' in an industry full of them. We've seen this before, of course, when a previous regime got rid of everyone with a strong connection to the club. Some of us remember how that turned out too. |
