| News Comment | When Chekhov saw the long winter... - Perryripheral Thoughts at 02:50:28
There's the rub Alex, I, like most of us didn't get the choice. Dragged along to what had been a third division south club to see the latter stages of Rodney lighting up Loftus Road and then the new dawn of Stanley. Follow that up with the golden era and by then I just thought it would be like this forever. Great article and you're right, one can never let go completely but apathy is less painful. |

Apart from the brilliant & often hilarious writing, I think the reason I've followed Lost For Words for neigh on 10 years now, is the fact that you seem to see things exactly the way I do. On my recent trip home, my Liverpool born, Australian wife & I attended the Preston, Hull, Southampton & Cardiff games (as it was a delayed honeymoon I concluded taking her to Millwall may have pushed her devotion a little too far & opted instead for the Colosseum) The ball on the wing, constantly being recycled backwards & across was mind numbing & we were both desperately urging someone to take the game by the scruff. Usually a fan but I thought both Smyth efforts were appalling last night, they were not half chances but were treated as such because why.....too early? Even at the level I played I knew in that position. low & hard, low & hard and that was before goalies were all seven foot! As you say, after a few better performances I was actually guilty of fancying us, but to play that team, in their current form for 98 minutes and not be able to get 1 goal, I fear the worst. |

Marvelous Clive I'm on the other side of the world but I feel I know Shirley - even pictured her. I didn't pick QPR, my mum & dad being from Shepherds Bush and Notting Hill respectively meant I had no choice. I still don't & wouldn't have it any other way. I try to explain to the locals, who tend to follow whatever state they find themselves in, no matter how bad they get, if QPR cease to exist, so does football in any meaningful capacity. I am there in December - see you in the Crown & Sceptre. |

Clive, you really are a credit to this club (or us fans anyway) You’re knowledge of ffp and it’s fatuous inconsistencies are really eye opening. Your coffee quip had the missus and I laughing. Coming over for December - hope to see you in the Crown & Sceptre |

Good job I work in here alone - many laugh out loud gems in this one. Agree with everything you said (except the bit about Chair scoring Armstrongs chance) but performances like those of Smyth & Armstrong make sitting up til 2am (soon to be 3am) on a Saturday night/Sunday morning much less confusing - I didn't for once rouse my snoring wife from the couch this week (she does try) asking why I put myself through it. We'll be there from December 2 through to New Year. Will pop into The Crown & Sceptre & say hello on match days. |

Screams, the like of which, not heard since a certain Bobby Zamora slotted home with his left could be heard at 2am, emanating from a certain Gold Coast apartment. happily, thus far, no eviction notice has arrived - perhaps my neighbours thought I was merely being murdered. |

My oldest friend just came over to Oz for my wedding. We'd go every Saturday to Loftus Road in the early seventies with our dads. Pete doesn't follow football anymore. Lucky bas^@rd...... |

Thanks Clive - fascinating interview with Les. Thanks too for explaining why the academy players can be plucked off by the Premier league at will - always perplexed me (as anything so blatantly unfair would.) I wonder what is stopping the owners from doing exactly what you suggested - I think that would be one of the great investments for the club (unless it meant kids would be reluctant to join a championship club where they couldn't be plucked by premiere league clubs?) As for the owners, I'm blown away by any QPR fan who doesn't appreciate just how much they do/spend and how much the club needs them. |

My Confession At the time I said it, didn’t really believe it. Ashamed to say therefore, immediately following Hedricks second, I carefully prized the half full glass from my long suffering wife who had, as always, stayed up to ‘watch’ the game and announced we were going to bed – it was after all, nearly two in the morning and my prophecy some 40 minutes prior that us being us – he would probably get a hattrick looked very much like happening – witchcraft indeed. My indignation was somewhat tempered by the fact, it being televised and therefore recorded - should the miracle happen, I could still watch the second half over a full English Sunday morning (late morning) |

Brilliant as always Clive - your exasperation really comes across and as AlanEnfield says, Critchley could do a lot worse than read this report out to them. As Jtuck reminds us - I was at Highbury in 82 and it really does highlight a difference in attitude from that team to this. |

Happy New Year Clive. Living here, I am one of those who rely on Nick & Andy at stupid o’clock in the mornings for my long distance relationship with my beloved team, an affair lasting 50 plus years, best part of thirty of those from afar. My problem is I still think of us as a premier league team. The year I left we were the top London club in it. I think it was that year I was bravely vociferous when surrounded by Chelsea fans in Ellerslie Road with my then wife, having gone two up only for Dennis Wise to equalise in injury time with an overhead kick…. The two shaven headed, hysterical gentleman in front turned and gave it to me large and I thought my time was up. A minute later they turned & apologised, as they’d ‘not realised I had me missus with me.’ There are not too many Qpr shirts to be seen on the Gold Coast (wasn’t that many in Harlow to be fair) and so apart from my long suffering wife, I have no one to share the joy, and let’s face it, more often than not, despair & frustration following a match. Prior to streaming, my contact with our club was limited to the handful of games shown on tv here which was almost non existent when we were in the third tier. Discovering you website, to have you vent what I’m thinking, share the great times, and frankly, provide insight that would otherwise get missed has genuinely helped me stay as engaged and passionate about our team as I still am. Above all, the humour. I am often to be heard laughing out loud at my desk on a Monday lunchtime. Keep up the great work Clive, your passion, humour, insight and tenacity combined with simply brilliant writing have and will sustain my love of our team regardless of performances like that against Luton. |

True - not a great spectacle but what it comes down to is their defender made a mistake from which we were highly likely to score, cheated & got away with it. Our defender made a mistake and they scored. We all love to blame refs and whilst we were indeed poor, I think in this case it is wholly justified. |
