Strikers, Defenders, Managers And Chairmen

Two Strikers Down, Two Defenders To Go

The Evening Post reported yesterday that Flynn was after both Paul Connor and Barry Conlon to bolster his attacking options ahead of the Swans 1-0 win at Cambridge last night which pushed them closer to the play off positions. A fee of £35,000 is believed to have been agreed with Rochdale for Connor after a chance meeting between Flynn and Steve Parkin at John Charles' funeral on Monday. A quick conversation and a handshake is believed to have sealed that deal.

Sources from Rochdale suggest that Connor will be a good signing for us and that Rochdale are consigned to losing him at some stage as he looks to progress his career. However, Conlon is reported to be 'the poor man's Kevin Nugent' - reading into that statement what you choose - and also seems unlikely to be allowed to leave the third division strugglers unless the offer made by Swansea is increased. Both Connor and Conlon are represented by the same agent who we understand represents a large number of players in Division Three.

However, Flynn has told the board of directors that he also needs two more defenders to complete his team building plans at Swansea and we understand that he has been given the green light to get these players in. Presumably we are looking at the full back berths which could signal the end of a Swansea career for either Michael Howard or Leon Hylton. Many fans will choose to see Howard shown the door although Hylton may be the unlucky one after a season full of injury which may tip the scales against him. Speculation of course.

Flynn has been supported well by the board this season as they seem hell bent on the play offs as a bare minimum from this season and has always been given the green light to obtain players as and when he needs them. The strikers that we are in talks with this week should, according to chairman Huw Jenkins, "have made these signings eight weeks ago. Then the FA Cup took over and things got left on the shelf." However, late is better than never in this situation and Connor is someone I would like to see at Swansea based on the opinion of someone I respect.

Meanwhile, rumours are surfacing in the North of England that Blackpool are considering the position of manager Steve McMahon. The Seasiders, who lie 15th in the second division are rumoured to be drawing up a short list of possible replacements with the name of Brian Flynn being one of them. I stress that this is just a rumour at this moment in time but a current poll on the Blackpool site, shows that McMahon has the fans split 50/50 on whether they want him to continue. We will continue to monitor the rumours on this front.

Never a dull moment eh?
