Marko's Memory Match Leeds United 1 Sheffield Weds 1 24-08-1991
Wednesday, 14th Aug 2013 23:13

Our second game of the 1991/92 season brought several milestones as well as it being a Yorkshire Derby. It would be the first time Howard Wilkinson would face his old charges and it brought the return of a former Elland Road favourite who did not look that pleased to see us again!

Wednesday had signed John Sheridan a year earlier from Nottingham Forest, where he failed to kick a ball in anger and was moved on just weeks following his £650,000 transfer to the City Ground from Elland Road. He was one of the rare ex players awarded a warm welcome from the Kop but for some reason chose to ignore us which brought a few boos from the fans who once adored him.

After a tense first half Wednesday took the lead, David Hirst underlining his reputation as a growing talent with a powerful run and shot past Lukic to give the visitors the lead.

It was an uncharacteristically untidy performance by Leeds and it looked like we were staring into the jaws of defeat. On 87 minutes we pushed forward, Rod Wallace tried a long punt forward, the diminutive Strachan somehow got his head on the ball, Wednesday failed to clear and Steve Hodge a summer signing from Forest and on as sub made a surging run into the box and despite going to ground managed to steer the ball past Chris Woods in the Wednesday goal to sacrifice what would be a priceless point.

The reaction on the terraces was one of relief and the worry that we had made hard work of beating a newly promoted side was put aside. Trevor Francis to his credit built up a decent Wednesday side who finished third that season which was a fantastic achievement.

However we would end the season as Champions, the last time in the old Division One to Four format which of course included that unbelievable 6-1 romp at Hillsborough in January 1992 which no doubt we will not need too much of an excuse to revisit later in the season!
