A few days ago Joe Rodon had one aim and that was to keep Saints out of the Premier League for next season as he played for Leeds United, but now after returning to his parent club Tottenham Hotspur, it seems that his next move might all be about keeping Southampton in the Premier League.

According to footballleagueworld.co.uk Southampton could be about to attempt to bring Joe Rodon to St Mary's.

They report that the central defender is considering his options for the next stage of his career.

After breaking into his first club's Swansea City's first team in 2018/19 he started to attract attention and in October 2020, Spurs paid around £11 million for his services.

But his first two seasons at the club were not great successes and in his third season was spent on loan at Stade Rennais in France, his time there was again not a great success, he would make just 16 appearances and spent most of the second half of the season as an unused sub, the option to buy was not exercised at the end of the season.

Therefore his loan to Leeds for this season was not exactly one that filled the Yorkshire club's fans with excitement.

However he became a virtual ever present in Leeds's team in the Championship, of the 45 regular season Games he could have played after joining, he started 42 of them came on as a sub in another 2 and was an unused sub on the other occasion, ironically in Leeds's 3-1 defeat at St Mary's.

Now it seems that he could finally get a chance to play in Southampton, as Russell Martin is said to be looking at Rodon as a possible summer signing.

Leeds's are said to be still keen on making his temporary loan move permanent, but with money now short at Elland Road and the need to sell before buying now on the cards after failing to win promotion, it could be that Rodon could prefer a move to a Premier League club and Saints could fit the bill.

Describes as a ball playing central defender, he would fit the bill for Southampton, although the one drawback could be his lack of Premier League experience, with just 15 games and 815 minutes to his name, there is the nagging doubt that he might not be up to the job at the highest level and Saints need experience.

Rodon is not the only Leeds player that Saints are said to be looking at, Dan James has been on our radar before and is said to again be a consideration.

DellBoyWally added 22:32 - May 30 It looks that, maybe, the Championship is his level? As for ABK, his time abroad has been dire. He played a few games but was soon dropped to the bench. He has alternated between injury and poor displays, certainly not the reliable CB we will need in the PL.

underweststand added 09:49 - May 31 Being a stand-out player with a Championship side (in this case 5 years ago with Swansea) doesn't guarantee even a bench place at a Prem. club. Although not having seen him that much, I was seldom impressed with Rodon, and his subsequent loan-outs to various clubs did little to enthuse fans that he was " the real thing ", and may never make it in reality. Our transfer committee will have the last say, but my real concern is.. .buying yet another player from Spurs ..and falling for the sort of deal Daniel Levy will dream up to sc*ew us. He is a master negotiator and would do well with a place on Dragon's Den. Clearly we got a nice deal with KWP, (but that was an exception) because the majority of the deals that Spurs have put over on us in the past are too painful to recall. If any potential deal over-states Rodon's valuation and they expect a swap with KWP , I fear we may be conned - yet again. I hope I'm wrong but he looks like another Holgate.

highfield49 added 15:34 - May 31 Rodon appears to have the versatility, defensive talent and ball playing ability that RM likes. Whilst he may not have gained accolades during his loan moves that might be more due to the set up of the team rather than his skills. He seems adaptable to playing in back three, four or five formations is two footed a strong character and team player. If Spurs are willing to sell, or loan, without their ridiculous hard bargain posturing then I think Rodon could be a very useful early acquisition this summer. Given a full preseason with the squad he could provide defensive experience and quality that younger players lack.
