Remembering Lorro
Remembering Lorro

We remember Peter Lorimer on the fourth anniversary of his passing.

At 15 years and 289 days the boy from Broughty Ferry Dundee remains the youngest ever player to represent the first team, making his debut in September 1962 against Southampton.

It would be the start of an initial 17 year spell at the club, only broken by a brief loan period in 1971 in South Africa. After 450 league appearances yielding 151 goals, Lorro began an association with Canadian football joining Toronto Blizzards. He returned to England for the 1979/80 season with York City before returning to Toronto before a couple of seasons with Vancouver Whitecaps. His next stop was UCD in Ireland before returning to ER aged 37 in 1985 and managing to amass another 76 league appearances plus 17 more goals.

He wound down his career at Whitby Town before finishing his playing days in Israel. He would also be capped for Scotland 21 times.

He remained connected at Elland Road by doing matchday punditry and if the media needed his input on big stories and breaking news at Elland Road, he could be found literally within one of his legendary 90 mph thunderbolts away at the Commercial Hotel pub he ran in Holbeck.

I'd often pop in for the honour of being poured a pint by a Leeds United legend and rub shoulders with the likes of John Charles, a great pal of Lorimers and Arthur Graham et al.

Sadly he did get some stick from a section of our fan base, particularly during the Ken Bates regime where he was accused of becoming a mouthpiece for the despised ex Chelsea owner.

He contributed to the matchday programme until his deteriorating health forced him to spend his final day's in a hospice.

Rip hot shot!
