£60m loss but nothing to worry about? Wednesday, 2nd Apr 2025 20:26 by Mark Monk Whilst the numbers may look scary there are more positives than negatives. Apparently! Leeds United have reported a £60.8m loss, according to figures released today. These figures relate to last season eg 2023/24. Inevitably dropping down a tier gas cost us in broadcasting revenue but actual matchday income was £500,000 higher than our last season in the EPL. We also owe £140m to other clubs in transfer fees, but that is seen as a drop in the ocean compared with Chelsea who currently owe three times as much. But didn't the Blunts cop a two point deduction for that sort of thing? And we are expected to be PSF compliant, without having to resort to selling our women's team to ourselves. The big sales last summer of Messers Summerville, Rutter and Gray apparently will ensure we are okay in the near future and not in danger of any points deduction. Some other figures worth noting as the losses have risen steeply from the -£33.7m posted in our 2022/23 relegation season. Compared with the last set of figures, our wage bill has dropped by 42%, so all those relegation reduction and loan clauses might not be so madcap after all. But at £84m for last seasons wage bill, by Championship standards is pretty massive. Football expert Kevin Maquire told BBC Radio Leeds earlier said there were more positives than negatives and covered both eventualities as what will be of this season. "If they go up they've got the riches of the Premier League. If the club doesn't go up, which nobody at Leeds United wants, then they have acclimatised to life in the Championship." Whether acclimatisation factors in another likely loss of top players and a further reduction of parachute payments, if we don't go up we will get 30% of the equally distributed amount per club generated from media rights. This is down from 55% in the summer of 2023, 45% last summer and it would also be the third and final such payment. So if like me all this accounting is a bit of a fog, to put it simply we need promotion!
