Saints Announce Signing Of New Striker
Monday, 2nd Feb 2026 22:32

As Adam Armstrong goes out of the door, in comes his replacement or perhaps in style of play Damion Downs replacement, whichever way welcome to Cyle Larin on loan from RCD Mallorca.

There perhaps won't be too much excitement at the arrival of Cyle Larins, but he can't be too bad a player if he has a 1 goal per 3 games ratio in the top leagues of the USA, Turkey, Spain & Holland.

southamptonfc.com have announced his arrival with the following statement.

We are delighted to announce the signing of striker Cyle Larin on loan from RCD Mallorca, with an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer.

The 30-year-old arrives on the south coast with significant domestic and international experience, with over 250 appearances and 86 goals across spells in America, Turkey, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands.

With 87 caps and 30 goals for Canada, Larin was part of Les Rouges’ 2022 World Cup campaign and sits second in the country’s all-time top scorers list.

Spending the first half of the season on loan at Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, Larin arrives at Saints to bolster Tonda Eckert’s attacking options for the remainder of the campaign."

So this is no untried youngster, he has experience, he will join an attacking roster that includes Ross Stewart, Jay Robinson & Cameron Archer, not to mention the goals supplied by Finn Azaz and Leo Scienza from the midfield.

We are not short of firepower up front and hopefully Larin will boost it further.

Hopefully the spirit shown in recent weeks will be improved, all the whispers coming out of the club suggest that cliques had formed in the dressing room, a shake up and clear out was needed , a few players have been moved on in this window including Joe Aribo on loan.

If we had gone on as we had been with the same old player getting the same results then we would probably have missed out on promotion, now the squad is much changed from that under Russell Martin and we can perhaps move forward again, we might get the same result and not get in the play offs, but at least we can now see that the squad is being rebuilt and a winning mentality starting to come back in.

As was shown at Stoke, we now have a team working hard for each other and with no hidden agendas.

I'd be happy with the fire sale, if the funds were invested in a sensible way, not another 30yr old journeyman, similar in mold to Ross Stewart

I would have preferred someone who had played most weeks this season in one of Europe's second divisions By the time he's up to speed the seasons over

sounds good enough on paper.. a mature, 6 '2" tall striker, able to speak English, and even with a somewhat erratic goal scoring tally, he's no better or worse than the other strikers we already have on the books. 4 months to see how he might fit in with our playing style.

If he's scored half-a dozen goals by the end of the season, might be worth a permanent deal - especially as we don't know what the future holds for Ross Stewart.

1 goal in his last 15. He is nowhere near 1 in 3

Can only judge him on performances and goals but an underwhelming replacement for one of the divisions top scorers. However if AA has hung up his boots may as well let him do a bit of work experience in the top league before coming back to the championship in May.
