Leeds to assess Beckford before Tranmere game
Leeds to assess Beckford before Tranmere game

Jermaine Beckford is still struggling with his thigh problem, and will have a fitness test before the vital game with Tranmere Rovers.

Simon Grayson told the official site "If there's any doubt he won't play because even though there's only two league games after the weekend they could be vital. I don't want him to play and miss those two and maybe the three afterwards if we get in the Play-Offs. He won't be risked if there's any danger, but he is progessing nicely so we'll see."

Fabian Delph starts a two-match ban on Saturday, and although Grayson hasn’t announced who will take his place, the likely choice must be Robinson, who has shown a lot of determination in his recent substitute appearances. And the winger will have the additional incentive of playing his former club. Robinson is a Birkenhead lad, and moved on to Swansea after beginning his career with his home town club.  He told the Yorkshire Post "We have to be on our guard against Tranmere, but I'm fully confident that we'll get a result. I've always scored against them so I'm sure they wouldn't like seeing me in the starting line-up."

Leeds go into the game three points ahead of Tranmere, and  a win would virtually seal our place in the play-offs, though we would still need one more point to be absolutely sure.  Scunthorpe are five points behind us with two games in hand but have a difficult game tomorrow at home to MK Dons, and they still have to go to Leicester. Tranmere and Scunthorpe play each other on the final day of the season, which should help us, as we only have to finish above one of them.

Simon Grayson seems to be very relaxed for this difficult stage of the season, but he is guarding against any complacency for this game. He told the official site "We're trying to get out of this league in a positive manner. The players are enjoying it, they're showing good temperament, and we're playing well.  We know if we win we more of less cement our place in the Play-Offs. Tranmere are on a good run they have a good level of consistency. They are hitting a spell at the right time.  We know it will be tough, they have to win as well, but we'll approach it as we have done all the games in the past few months and try and get a positive result."

And Ronnie Moore also sounded upbeat when he spoke to Tranmere’s official site. "We know we've got to win so we're not going there to defend. It's going to be a good attacking game. Everybody expects Leeds to win, but I don't see it like that. Our away form isn't brilliant, so every bookmaker would give you a Leeds win, but it doesn't work like that. We're as good as anybody at this level and if we can go and put in a performance like I know we're capable of, Leeds will know they've been in a game. “

Tranmere are coming into this game on a fine run of form, having won six of the last eight, including Easter victories over Walsall and Hereford, but they will also have problems with injuries and suspensions. Midfielder Chris Shuker and striker Chris Greenacre will be out with injury, and defender Ian Goodison begins a four-match ban after being sent off at home to Hereford on Monday. In Goodison’s absence, captain Antony Kay might have to fill in at centre back.

But despite Tranmere’s good run, I’m still confident about this one. Since the start of January we’ve won the home games we needed to win against our fellow promotion contenders, with Peterborough, Millwall, MK Dons and Scunthorpe all being beaten at Elland Road. Some of these sides were also in good form at the time they came to Leeds, so I’m tipping our boys to grind out a win tomorrow and surpass Sergeant Wilko’s  team by claiming a tenth successive home victory.
