My missus says to me last night," how many ROUNDS of bread would you like with your fish.

My mother used rounds to describe what are simply slices of bread.

Should have said,

"Do you want petit pains with your turbot, darling"

Or should it be pain

Over to you wise Owl

When I first began to post here I warned people that I might fulminate at grammatical idiosyncrasy. I got a message back to tell me that that could be offensive to some. I refrain as much as I can.

I love the word 'refrain' - a while back a croupier in a Swansea casino kept telling me to refrain when I kept trying to scoop up winnings too early. It seemed like an important metaphor to me.

'Post when I'm winning, I only post when I'm winning'

I'd like to give you an extra up arrow for fulminate.

Splendid stuff.

Refrain is pretty traumatic for me as it conjures up images of hymn books, wet Welsh Sundays and hypocrites in cheap suits

Football players/managers that start the sentence with "Like I said.....and didn't mention anything before

Listening to a Welsh accent on TV/Radio and them saying " Like" after every word

I freely admit to being a pretentious smartarse grammar(school) snob. Vote Theresa May if you wish for more. Vote Corbyn if you want people who know something about grammar but who also think that everybody deserves a good education.

Off point, I know, but fulmination should be directed at wider targets than misspellings and glitches in sentence construction.

I was using grandiose language well before you ,sir, in the second coming age, when anything more than one syllable was fair game To be pilloried .It wound him up but amused me and nobody died.

My god, you re a cracking contributor and I'm not playing grammatical dramatics with you

"Can I get?" - No you can't - someone is there to serve and will get it for you, you dopey tvvat.

"Think outside the box" - bugger the box, just think. Your brain doesn't need to be in or outside a box.

"SMART goals" - specifically the Achievable bit. Not really a saying as such, but something all mindless organisations have entrenched in their corporate jargon. Aiming for the achievable is the surest way to stifle creativity and potential.

"buns" instead of cakes. Really fecking annoys me, it's and Irish thing, and apparently a northern thing. The mrs says it all the time and says it a lot more now she knows how much it annoys me. A bun is bread for gods sake, a cake is a cake.

Upthecity!
