HantsR shouldn't have said "if the BODMAS rule applies" (my emphasis), because it just does apply. There's no simple assumption of reading left to right in maths.

Anyway, LFW did better than the 99% failure rate comfortably!

It's been a long time since I went to school and if I have ever heard of BODMAS, I have long forgotten it.

So will you real brain boxes please explain to us mere mortals how you get 43 as I still make it 48, whether I read from the right, left or whatever.

But no-one spoke about BODMAS when I did GCE A level Maths or my science degree all those years ago - I accept that it's the modern adopted convention in Excel and computer operations so yes, would apply in this case but I'm sure that in my youth (talking early 1960s here) without parentheses, I would have performed the calculation in a sequential way, left to right. Hence my use of 'if'

Haven't done much maths brainwork for a while now, but I know I'm much better at mental arithmetic than most people I know :)

I learnt it in third or fourth form maths (age about 14) in NZ in the very early seventies. Wasn't anything controversial. You'd probably just forgotten it. You absolutely need it to make sense of equations.

Sorry, I am blessed/afflicted with a very good memory. I did not forget it - I may not have been taught it or was possibly too preoccupied with thoughts of scooters, girls and QPR.

5 + 19 * 2 = 43
(5 + 19) * 2 = 48

Multiplication takes precedence if there are no brackets. Always has been and always will
