Wales is miniscule in comparison and the difference between say Cardiff and Caernarfon are greater than that of Quebec City and Montreal.

I understand the point the MP was trying to make and don’t think it should be vilified, just criticised for being in incredibly bad taste given the circumstances and a bit of an exaggeration. But that’s what Welsh nationalists do, it’s in their very core, to exaggerate the appetite within Wales for independence etc. and exaggerate the ‘brutality’ of what is akin to ancient history. I honestly don’t know how some of them get through life obsessed with the narrative and martyr/inferiority/oppressed mindset. Wales historically at most was a motley crew of petty kingdoms who spent most of the time beating the shit out of each other. It was only united as a single state for around 7 years in the late 11th century. The gavelkind succession that was common amongst Celtic kingdoms meant that upon death territory was divided up which led to more smaller, weaker kingdoms that carried on fighting, whereas the Normans and other later English dynasties used primogeniture succession which meant the kingdom generally stayed intact upon death which preserved their power.
This is largely why England could stay large and strong whilst wales was constantly being divided into smaller, weaker kingdoms bickering amongst themselves. |

All the people in England identify as English never been any call for any English area to want independence. Even the house of York, who were defeated by the Welsh Tudor King Henry, are happy being part of the UK. | |
