How you buy yours, the odd bottle or in bulk?

Like a South African red me. Stellenrust Cinsault from Waitrose. Magic. I only buy a bottle once in a while mainly because the wife isnt much of a drinker and only likes RosÃ¨.

I did a Christmas working at the Wine Society in their head office taking Christmas orders. They regularly held tastings on site and anything that wasn't tasted we could take home. Was getting free wine every day to take home and that got me into it. Keeping it localish to where I am these days, any reds from the Priorat region in Spain are right up my street.

Been trying to find out more about red wine, but I'm yet to develop a consistent taste for a grape, let alone a vineyard.

If there was an Irish equivelant to the Wine Society or Yapp Brothers, I'd try it. I use Bubble Brothers here in Cork but they're expensive and not great with advice. Three years later, I'm poorer and no wiser.

before Brexit the WS used to deliver to Ireland Brian but sadly that buggered that- I have always found wine a bit on the pricey side over there

I use the failsafe technique for choosing wine that if there aren’t many bottles left on the supermarket shelf then it’s probably quite good. It usually works too!

If there are lots left it’s either not very good or too expensive.

I'm an old world snob. It costs more cos it's better imo. That said there's some excellent value in the lesser noted regions - Portuguese wine for eg is incredible value

White: I am a Riesling Ultra. Trocken uber alles. Had a grand cru recently at Quality Wines. Heavenly. Vinho verde is unbeatable on a hot day. I have a magnum of Noble Rot's Chin Chin but it's so tall it's impossible to chill.

Red: A variety here - Burgundy is my first love, Beaujolais not far behind. Morgon too - Gamay ftw. Reds from Douro region of Portugal are sensational fruit bombs. Likewise Riberio del Douro in Spain Recent love of Garancha from Navarra - dry and spicy.

Rose: Provence or GTFO. Crisp, dry, see through

Bubbles: Life is short - drink champagne. Blanc des blancs and ultra brut my preference. I like it masochistically dry. Cava is tremendous value for money.

I buy natural from Forest Wines as it's nearby, Berry Bros at Christmas, Majestic for getting bulk orders of Minuty rose in Summer

I'm into what most people (including myself) would regard as expensive wine and over years have bought far more than I can reasonably drink, which means I have quite a lot in bonded storage. Rising prices over the last ten years mean it's risen much more than any standard investment which sounds great but isn't really because I didn't buy it as an investment and drinking a bottle that was £30 at purchase but now worth £150 becomes an unwanted financial decision.

On the subject of bubbles, I agree but Bouvet sparkling from Majestic is utterly sensational (i couldn't be confident of passing a blind test of that versus a standard champagne). £8.99 on black friday deal at Majestic (i don't work for them) is a proper bargain....not one of you will come back and disagree. That is my pledge to you.
