Jonjo Shelvey hero or villain? 20:57 - Sep 16 with 26214 viewsLord_Bony

Considering his young age needs a bit more experience to become a great asset for us.

Still some sloppy play that needs sorting out.

Got a habit of hoofing it blindly

Jury is out for me.

Gives away possession far too easily.

I'm not sure we need an Alan Tate style character/comedy player.

We are not in the lower leagues anymore, the stakes are far higher now.

On his showing so far Shelvey will lose us more points than he gains us over the course of a season.

Very harsh that GJ, the lad is only 21 and he knows what he did, he'll be ok.

Tate has never been a comedy player.

threw the game away, seeing as the only thing in the game for liverpool was the two goals he gifted to them.

we would have smashed them otherwise.

still happy with a point though

And also saved the game because the only 2 things we got goals from were from him....So your point is???

I admit to not having been an enthusiastic voice for Shelvey, but after his second half performance, I gained worlds of respect for him. Hemingway said that courage is grace under pressure. Shelvey showed that kind of courage - and character.

And Laudrup showed his great man-management wisdom by keeping him on the pitch for the full 90 - even when he had that yellow card as an excuse if he had wanted to use it.

That showed Laudrup's character, as well.

I would have preferred a win, but something very valuable came out of this, worth more than the point in the long run.

I don't care. I'm old. I don't have to.

shelvey was brilliant second half

showed some serious bollucks

the rest of the team was also brilliant

routledge in particular was a serious handful

the introduction of de guzman for dyer was perplexing at the time but worked superbly

pozuelo looks a real player too

options seem much better than this time last season, i can see us going on a nice long winning streak at some point in the season

very encouraging performance indeed
i doubt liverpool have played a half of football with only 30% possession very often

Agree with most of the positive stuff in this thread - yes, Shelvey could have cost us the game but, fair play to him, he realised that and did all he could to make amends. I'm really pleased for him that he got the assist for our second as it clearly meant a lot to him.

Hopefully it's another big step along his learning curve.

Obvious talent, but lacking in footballing intelligence at the minute.

Really needs to take a split second to think about where he's going to pass it and whether it's really a good idea.

I asked the same question, but not just in football. Is he slightly mentally challenged? Notice the way he mumbles during an interview. Besides he is a drama queen on the pitch

Don't think 'hero or villan' is a comprehensive enough spectrum to sum up Jonjo's night tonight. Mental. How many players either scored or directly/indirectly set-up all 4 goals for both teams in a game...against said players former club...live on international tv.

Fair play to Laudrup for sending him out 2nd half to make amends, and for Jonjo for manning-up and getting on with it.

In the cold light of day we can't overlook the 2 big mistakes Jonjo made - and they weren't exactly out of character - but I think his redemption, and the managerial faith in him that gave him the opportunity to make amends has galvanised the team/fans, which is only good going forward.

It seems bizarre given his errors, but I get the feeling Jonjo properly became a jack tonight.

Jekyll and Hyde maybe? Ever since he`s arrived at the Liberty this is the type of performance we`ve had out of him Laudrup is still pleased with his response and he`s still young but will have to learn from his mistakes. Jekyll 4/10 Mr Hyde 7/10!

I can only echo what's generally been said in here; he will cost us goals when his head is in the shed, but will also win us games when he's on his game. You can tell that he is all heart and he showed some serious gonads to get out there in that second half and play the way he did, so all credit to him for that.

We had some clueless morons booing his every touch shouting 'Sell him' after their second goal; when we equalised I turned into that old green smug smiley from Jackarmy.net and their faces were a joy to behold.

A visiting (this forum) Liverpool supporter suggested we have bought a 24 carat diamond in a a pile of dogshyt, unfortunately they cant be separated. Last night was compelling evidence of that.

Spot on Doc.

Jury's still out on Shelvey for me. We'll see at the end of the season. Showed loads of character though to not hide.

Pozuelo - does this guy ever have a less than excellent game? Seen him in action for us 3 times now and he's been outstanding on each occasion.

Strange position of contributing to all four goals heh...

That assist to Michu was a great head down,so all is forgiven.

He's got lots of potential and character there just needs more experience.

Post match interview he was nearly in tears apologising to the fans for gifting those two goals love him.

I really think he ll learn from this one and will prove himself for us.

From day one I have said he is a good signing (I dont say this about all I do eg Bony, Poz Canas who I know little about) but at the moment Shelvey is a starter against Palace.

In the big games (top 6) and in the derby v cardiff I would play Michu up front and Britton Canas and de Guzman in midfield with Pablo and Routs on the wing. Safe, predictable, imo our best players.

Shelvey will have a part and as Townsend say he is not the big man at our club. Leon is still the main man and Michu our most importnat player. Shelvey will do well i think but needs a season.

Picture the scene - he had a horrid first half up against his previous team, who were proved right to sell him on, as he's not good enough.Jonjo must have been so emotional in last nights game and it showed. That was until the 2nd half, when a word in his shell by the coaching staff, Shelvey comes out with a second half MOM display. Now that's character!!

Thought he did really well to recover from the first half, and made some excellent passes.

Everyone makes mistakes. Taylor, Williams (a few) but we move on. The issue of this was highlighted to extreme as he just scored and was against his former club.

However he is not the only one responsible for their 2nd goal, seen it a few times now and everyone just backed off Moses. Not one person tried to close him down and he got the ball from just inside our half so for him to run the whole of our half and score without be challenged needs to be looked at.

Great night however.

Just call me JFK

Moses recieved the ball off Shelvey on the halfway line almost. He should have been dealt with long before he got his shot away.

Guy makes two mistakes -horrendous ones- and comes back to create the equaliser.
Didn't hide or beg to get subbed or get injured.
Yep, he ll do for me.
I prefer the type of player wh has reral heart and this lad has it.
Some of our squad are simply not possessing his desire.

Mentally challenged really? Looking back on your posting history one might consider you would be a specialist.

His interview performance - watch and weep. His passion and sincerity shines through. See how Swansea supporters got behind him. Despite what happened see the character he showed.

You would do well to learn from JJS in many aspects of your persona.

How is Ki by the way - still suffering from your support? The burden of fame no doubt.

The biggest question for me isn’t his ability...which is excellent, but whether he fits our style of play. We looked far more comfortable and at ease with keeping the ball with JDG playing in that position and Shelvey pushed into a more advanced role. This is something I don’t think we will want to do too often, as it takes Michu out of his best position.

At the end of the game, you could clearly hear the Liberty faithful loudly chanting Shelvey's name as he walked off the pitch.

Fortunately, the crowd showed a lot more class than some of the posters on here.

mentally challenged eh.
I can think of many of our former and a few of our currect crop that would have got themselves subbed or injured just to avoid having to go out and face the crowd.
I d rather have a player with real balls than one like PABLO who is si9mply too shitscared to get involved when it gets dirty
