Plenty of mistakes made last night, but this team is running on fumes, with a massively depleted squad that’s absolutely riddled with injuries that only seems to get worse every week.We ended the game with half the development squad on the pitch, barely out their footballing nappies. Southampton are chock full of quality and squad depth and should be right up there and probably will be come season end.

We have to accept that another season of promise has been ruined, again, by an unacceptable incapacitation of the playing squad and not by a lack of effort from the few fit enough to turn up week in week out.

It’s probably fair to say that Walsh hasn’t played anywhere near enough senior football matches in the last five years and should be further along in his development and that’s probably true for a few of our development squad. But they have been thrown in at the deep end are doing the best they can under the circumstances. There is potential in all of them, but the going will be hard at this level with their inexperience.

The probable loss of Madsen only compounds our problems and the season is now likely over for us, so the focus absolutely needs to be on BW and so called conditioning team. This season has been nothing short of catastrophic. It needs to be significantly better next season.

Been better than Kone. He has been awful. Said it before, can’t trap a ball, loses it constantly and slow as sludge. Utter donkey.

Blackburn Reflection
at 09:39 15 Feb 2026

That “smallest man on the pitch” just happened to be the best player on the pitch by a country mile. His pass for the first goal was sublime and undefendable.

Massively surprised by Blackburn, they looked stronger, well drilled and definitely up for a battle to avoid relegation. By no means the worst team we have seen at our place this season.

Anyone thinking we are good enough for a play off push with our current line up is kidding themselves. If we don’t get a few players back soon, we will continue to slide further down the table. Letting Field go was not a good decision.

I like Vale, technically good, but very rarely seems to get on the ball, so his touch percentage must be well below average for someone playing in his position.

Sam Field pulling the strings for Norwich just doesn’t feel right at all to me. It’s exactly what we need in our midfield. Madsen needs two players in there that can regain possession and provide him with the platform to perform.

What was also concerning against Charlton, was the number of times Madsen was looking to play a forward pass and there was no one showing or making the runs, necessitating him to play backwards. A front 3 of Saito, Kone and Smyth just isn’t cutting it. Kolli and Bennie added much needed physicality when they came on. Saito and Smyth simply get bullied too easily.

Whether or where Edwards plays is largely irrelevant for me, it’s who’s leading the line and whether they can hold the ball up and “get us the pitch”. That is our Achilles heel at the moment. 33 clearances by the Dunne/Cook barrier tells you everything. We clear it, it comes straight back.

Where is Poku?

Willock now banging in the goals for Cardiff on a regular basis.

Evidence would suggest a long recovery period for damaged hamstrings is a must, unfortunately.

Should only be used as a sub in truth. Useful when the opposition is tired, where he can add some fresh legs on the wing. Gets battered by defenders when starting games.

The two wingers we have needed all season haven’t been available, leaving us to use the squad players brought in to cover their absence.

The injuries to Chair and Poku have effectively ruined what might have been a decent chance of a play off push.

Would prefer Bennie and Kolli to Smyth and Saito.

The antidote – Report

Yep, still choking on the humble pie. Well done to Kone on what was a terrific performance. Where’s that been for the last ten games though, and can he reproduce it on a regular basis?

Perhaps the movement and quality of Vale and Bennie alongside him was a contributing factor.

Let’s hope he keeps it up. We will need more of the same on Friday.

To top off a fantastic weekend, I have just ordered tickets for the Embrace 30th anniversary tour.

He had 3 goal scoring opportunities and got himself in position to do so. A bit more composure and he could have had a hat trick.

He’s more than good enough for a place in the first team squad and can build from there. That’s ultimately why he’s here and he looks hungry for more.

That is the club strategy is it not?

Possession stat
at 12:24 1 Feb 2026

That’s why there should be more players involved in the press, although that potentially leaves the door open for balls through the channels or over the top.

We do have a tendency to sit deep and go to press the defenders just inside their own half of the pitch, which suits us and maintains our defensive shape and structure.

Possession stats are now just meaningless twaddle.

The players with the most touches these days tend to be the centre halves. Van Dyke leads the way in the Premier.

Tells you all you need to know.

As one of Kone’s biggest critics, hands up today, I thought he had a great game. Control was far better, held up the ball and layed it off to good effect. Also won his fair share of headers and took his goal well. Delighted for him.

Fantastic team effort, but I thought Vale had a great game and will blossom into a very important player for us. The lad has great vision and can pick a pass. He will complement Madsen well in this team.

Madsen showing his class again. Plays with his head up and with superb composure. Class act.

I thought Bennie did well. Missed a couple of decent chances and showed his inexperience, but gave us much needed legs down that right hand side. Should now be a permanent fixture in the first team squad.

I thought you were describing a certain other striker with very similar, ahem, attributes.

Regardless, good luck Michi, top bloke who always tried his best and that is always appreciated.

The style of football played is entirely dependent upon the capabilities of the players, regardless of the perceived and preferred playing style of the CEO.

Naive of those upstairs to expect anything else.

“How he didn’t take Morgan off after 20 mins baffles me and Dembelle should have gone with him.
Where were the older experienced pros at the end to take control
I would rather we put out some of the younger players than some of our current team”

Make your mind up. You want the older pros on or you would rather have the young players.

The older, experienced heads were on at the end. Ultimately there was a mix of both, which is as is should be given our squad make up and injury list.

We didn’t defend as a team and paid the price.

Good post SR, agree entirely on every point. Morgan will be a very good player for us, eventually. He is young, hasn’t had much game tame and it shows, but he is capable and is positive with the ball, far more so than Field, Hayden or Varane.

Vale had a very good first off, but tired dramatically in the second. Good technique and a tidy player who will also come good.

Hugely disappointing to lose the game the way we did, but the lack of composure to manage the game effectively for 5 mins was bizarre. We seemed to pack the six yard box but left countless Wrexham players unmarked outside of it and on the edge of the 18 yard box and failed to close them down. Two quality finishes though.

Need to look for the positives, but the absence of Chair and Poku for most of the season has been the killer for me. Expected big things from them both, with the current encumbants just there to cover the odd injury or 3 game weeks.

We also need a permanent partner in the middle alongside Madsen, as I’m not convinced any of the currently available 3 are the answer.

I’ve made my opinion clear on Kone. I don’t think he has the “tools” for this level, but hope to be proven wrong.

I don’t think this is the game for Ronnie. In his only full game for Southampton, Kieffer Moore gave him a roasting in the air. Will need Dunne and Cook to try and curb that threat today.
