I used to take a little of corners and as you rightly point out, it really isn't hard to become proficient at them. Obviously, it requires some practice but we do have training sessions.
Get under the ball, then loft a curving ball over to the penalty spot at head height. Other corners are available but that is a pretty dangerous, basic one.
Actually, I think there's a wider point here: Our set pieces in general are just not good enough. Why is that? Some form of snobbery, a "Set piece goals are only for agricultural teams" mindset? Lack of practice? A bit of both?
Think about the teams which are known to be clinical with their set pieces. The improved outcomes are not the only benefit, there's also the anxiety and sense of dread they cause for the opposition.
As Clive said in a recent piece, it's nearly four years since we scored from a free kick!  Man alive, that is a shocking stat.
We are missing a trick here. |

Admittedly the sample size - just the four games - is small, but how often do we get a ref whose average LFW rating is 7?
Given that, we'd be well advised to brace ourselves for at least one absolute howler  . Expect the unexpected

1-1 FT. Disappointing. Opportunity missed, we were all over them for most of the first half. Good teams make the amount of dominance we had then count, by scoring multiple goals. |
