"Oooo! That ball went right off his Brylcream!" On a favourite striker's attempt to head a difficult cross. " Oh Come on! Don't pass to him. He'll score once in a Preston Guild if he's lucky! |

There are still eight games to play. Let's wait until the corpse has stopped twitching before the post-mortems start. |

The midfield is slightly worrying as Field, Varane, Morgan, Madsen is asking a lot of a 19 year old and asking Madsen to rapidly adapt. Asking Madsen to do anything rapidly is a real stretch. Weirdly though, I have an uncanny, and quite irrational, feeling that he might come good... probably elsewhere. |

Yup. He's a "Known-Unknown," as they say in North American sports, as are Kelman and Larkeche who will surely also be in the mix next season. [Post edited 16 Mar 20:13]

If he continues to impress with us he'd possibly have an outside chance of making the US WC squad. [Post edited 15 Mar 21:59]

I've certainly no background in sports of any kind, but I have worked with a number of people whose work, similarly, is performative and very public. Those who 'fake it' 'dog it' or "can't be arsed" don't last long. An individual work/performance may suck but authentic application can't be faked. Their colleagues know it and their employers recognise it. As do others in the same field. If, as you suggest, they don't believe, or understand, team tactics then the coaches have a problem. I still tend to believe we've a small — in numbers and stature — squad who are experiencing hills and valleys. We know they can play an awful lot better than they did today, because we've seen them do it. I don't see any reason why they can't in the future. [Post edited 12 Mar 3:39]

So, what then are the reasons why players who've been competitive over a long spread of matches go off the boil, other than fatigue? |

More than anything I think we looked knackered. We we've been playing the same core group of players game in and game out and it's starting to show. Like them or not, regulars like Chair, Saito, Dunne, Paal, and Smyth have put in a lot of yards over the past few months. The fact that Andersen seemed so lively when he came just underlined the fact. We... they... badly need the upcoming break. |

He looked handy in his first few games, but lately... not so much. |

I haven't re-watched it but at the time, based on the camera angle, it appeared that Lloyd was unmarked and goal-side of Saito. If he'd missed the ball completely Alfie might — and i emphasise "might" — have had a tap in. |

Yeah he got there late, and at maximum speed, he was never going to have full control or accuracy. |

So he did. He and Alfie need to switch squads next season. |
