Financial Fair Play - Wrexham?
at 17:31 28 Mar 2024

Gate revenues probably exceed wages meeting that criteria, but If Director Loans are not permissible, how come Wrexham owe £8M+?

Gillespie and son have regularly attended U’s matches at Salford. I guess he resides nearby.

Frankly, I’m not surprised former players turn up on days when they have no fixture given the past team bonding formed. it is inevitably legends or those that upwardly progressed (by transfer etc) rather than those discarded, the latter possibly having hurt pride, and, of course, if still fit, having continued playing commitments where not released to join us by an International Window. What I respect is they will sit with the real fans, and not the prawn sandwich brigade. But again that’s possibly natural. Why sit in an area in the ground where nobody will recognise you? Tchamadeu loved the hero worship at Salford posing for selfies and signing autographs. Nice lad.

Now the club is offering post season pitch hire for £750. Isn’t the higher priority to resolve the drainage?

FGR have a horrendous run in. No games are in L2 are easy, but having to face most of the promotion contenders at the tail end of the season with already inferior goal difference and the U’s having two games in hand can’t be a good position for the vegans.

Our fate is wholly in our own hands and we face more mid to lower table teams largely at home. Safe from relegation, but unable to make the play offs, some might take their foot off the gas. Frankly, I still think Grimsby remain vulnerable. But having watched Chilvers miss yet another penalty, I fear we are in for a nervous ride.

Saddle up for three vital points
at 17:25 16 Mar 2024

Chilvers, an absolutely diabolical penalty (yet again) that even I might have saved. Bradley wanted to take it, Chilvers wrestled it off him. Now two potentially crucial points dropped. Hope it doesn’t bite us later. As it turns out, Sutton did us a favour and before the game I think most fans would be have been happy with these results. But we are own worst enemy. Handed three points on a plate and Mr far too casual Chilvers screws it up. I despair.

Why not sort out some hand rails?

Dozens of elderly fans have ceased attending because the steps are dangerous. My size 14s mean I have to go down sideways else only my heels are supported. Many of my elderly pals now trek to the outer walls simply to have something to lean upon to steady themselves.

Simple scaffolding like rails would do.

Smaller pitch might benefit us. We will always be closer to the opposition goal than previous. Maybe we might shoot more often and Akinde last more than 60 minutes?

Something for fans of Led Zeppelin
at 19:00 12 Mar 2024

As a “skinhead” teenager I often frequented Sounds Around, a hugely popular instrument, sheet music and vinyl store in Kidderminster, arguably the best in the West Midlands.

My then favoured music genre was Motown, then later Ska & Two Tone (etc), so when introduced to some other, but “hairy” shoppers, such as Robert Plant and Roy Wood, I was unimpressed. Frankly, I was clueless who they were as we were so polarised into skins” or “hairies”. Indeed, I should apologise for my rude disinterest as I didn’t recognise Led Zeppelin as a music force until Whole lotta love became the TOTP theme tune.

It is funny how 50+ years on, and me still bald, and they still hairy, I now appreciate their talent and contribution to the Midland, indeed global, music scene. Clifford T Ward was another local boy, that frequented the shop, albeit he was merely a #1 one hit wonder (with Gaye). I suspect that I probably rubbed shoulders with many other celebrity shoppers, but had zero awareness. I was bright enough to realise that owner, Brian Wilson wasn’t a Beach Boy, but I recall that was the focus of some wind ups with younger, more gullible grammar school kids to which this retail outlet was our Mecca.

Is it time to buy a super sopper? Perhaps borrow one from Essex CCC?

At home it’s easy TOOT. Takes a mere 20 seconds to plug-in if one has installed a proper charger. But when away from home it can be a nightmare, and there (IMHO) lies the flaw with EVs, given that many properties (flats etc) can’t install a home charger…..

1. One can pay as little as £0.08 per kWh at home, yet it can be £0.70 at rip off public chargers.
2. Chargers are specific to different types of connector. Not all will fit one’s car.
3. Not all EVs can use the super fast chargers. The process is tedious.
4. The UK public EV charging infrastructure is dire (or too expensive). Range anxiety is very real.

Recognising all of these issues, I consciously chose a Plug -in Hybrid EV (PHEV). 95% of my motoring is in EV mode, hence incredibly cheap and tail-pipe emissions friendly. However, once beyond EV battery range, I can switch to petrol (hence avoiding range anxiety) and even use my ICE to recharge the EV battery. That feature seems to defy the laws of physics as it is remarkably efficient (but less so than plugging in), assisted by regenerative braking that captures otherwise lost energy. However, I’m pleased that I didn’t go 100% EV (only) as the UK infrastructure isn’t ready, but motoring in EV mode is fun, convenient (if an home charger available) and fast.

Now I have to make an even more complicated which side fill-up decision as the petrol filler is on my near side and electricity filler on my offside. But I too have a little dashboard arrow to guide me. I recall first seeing this feature in 2006 when I purchased a car with a wholly digital rather than analogue display. Going digital dashboard was a wider eureka moment as you can now suffer 50+ often inexplicable digitally displayed warnings. That represents true owner anxiety when a warning light flashes and only a dealer with computer can diagnose it.

Possibly the impact of the Taylor Review, post Hillsborough….

Stewarding, Policing and similar costs inevitably rise in line with higher gates, I don’t know the current ratios, but breaking through each headcount threshold makes such costs rise steeply. I once managed a charity cricket match where we deliberately had to cap the public attendance as breaking through into the next level was counter productive. The cost of mandatory extra match day support then exceeded the value of extra tickets sold, until an even higher threshold was reached.

But then, it could also be simple greed………

The could be some impacts from nearby development if poorly planned. When Billericay Football Club made various changes, the unforeseen impact on the adjacent Billericay Cricket Club meant a regularly waterlogged cricket square as water unexpectedly poured down the slope in its direction. For a couple of seasons the number of playing days lost by the Essex Second XI on otherwise sunny days were frustrating. Conditions had changed and previously adequate drainage struggled to cope until alternative remedies were found.

Hybrid pitch technologies might make the surface more resilient to wear, but the issue here must be a combination of (a) too much water getting on the pitch and (b), consequent inadequate drainage. My wider experience within cricket suggests cack-handed manipulation of flat covers by too few inexperienced persons can also be the difference between playing or not. It is staggering how much water accumulates on flat covers and if that runs off the edges onto a narrow strip it can make that area worse than had the pitches been uncovered. I am suspicious that at the Jobserve Stadium the worst areas are typically around the pitch perimeter. So how is water seeping back underneath or otherwise accumulating there? The covers appear to do an adequate job in the centre of the pitch, so is it the run-off that is problematic?

Essex CCC at the Chelmsford Cloud ground staff drive a “Super Sopper” over the flat covers to first remove the full accumulation of surface water before removing flat covers. At Castle Park we have a (manual) push version that removes a staggering amount of surface water from the top of covers before we dare lift them but that is incredibly labour intensive. I know it has occasionally borrowed Essex CCC’s machine, but has Colchester United invested in a “Super Sopper,” of its own? Pitch covers are perfectly adequate elsewhere, so there has to be an explanation. Where does the 120M x 60M layer of water on top of the covers drain?

I did it...

Deprived of my footie fix (that is before Villa came on TV at 1730), I’ve had a fascinating afternoon watching the 2023 movie “Ferrari”. Not the greatest flick I’ve ever seen, but I discovered a personal connection that I have had for 60 years without any real cognisance of the events.

When I was a young boy (age around 8 to 10), my parents, sister and I would regularly cycle from my home town of Kidderminster to nearby Bromsgrove, and we always stopped about half way for a picnic lunch at the village of Mustow Green, where my mum would always pick and put a few fresh wild flowers on the grave of Peter Collins.

Whilst I knew he was a motor racing driver killed when racing, until today, when portrayed in the movie, I didn’t realise that he was a star at Ferrari, and a peer of Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Fangio etc. The movie portrays how Collins was favoured with the more powerful Ferrari in the 1957 Mille Miglia. and how his colleague that had swapped cars then crashed killing himself and nine spectators, an event that ended Italian road racing. Controversy followed, with Enzo Ferrari initially charged with manslaughter. Collins himself was killed the following year. It was a seriously dangerous sport in that era.

I recall that his grave was simple, with little more to suggest sporting success other than a tiny Statue of Liberty like Gold Flame at its centre. Nothing remotely or gloriously appropriate to his achievements. But it is funny how a movie brought back happy thoughts of bikes, picnics and the occasional puncture.

Plenty of local non-league also off, including Stanway Rovers.
