Like some of our injured players, I'm hoping to be able to make it back to LR after the international break, so my comments are based on watching the game on Sky.
I thought we looked quite good for the opening 30 minutes. That is, quite good until we got close to the Burnley penalty area! Our decision making in that part of the pitch was very poor, with the main culprits being Smyth & Saito who both decided they could do everything by themselves. On the other hand, Kamara was always looking to lay the ball off even though he was in a better position than those he passed to. Our period of domination had ended before the Burnley goal & we never regained it. I was a little surprised that they didn't score a second.
Both goals were due to poor goalkeeping & between both sides there were only two real chances created ( I don't include shots from outside the area, although Edwards came close to scoring). These were for the chance Chair skied & the Obikwu one at the end.
Ilias looked to be a long way short of being ready to start a game as he was quite wayward with his passing & slow to react when in possession. I'm sure he will come good though.
Gazza mentioned the poor header from Edwards that led to the Burnley goal & the same applied to the second Southampton goal on Saturday. Other than that, I would say that Ronnie was our best player last night. |

IMO Ryan Manning is one of the best footballers in The Championship & possibly/probably the best left back, defensively as well as what he offers going forward. I can't remember any issues with his attitude while he was at Rangers, apart from turning down a new contract that he was belatedly offered. That was down to the club as much as it was Manning & why BOS isn't reviled as much as Manning by some Rangers fans is a complete mystery to me. Indeed, he didn't p*ss us about like BOS & he made it clear that he wouldn't sign a new contract. That is very different to refusing to play & give his all on the pitch.
He is definitely of Premier League quality, perhaps not of the Upper half, but far better than top of Tier 2. |

Thanks Clive, I was watching a stream that was so bad that I gave up with it at half time. From what I could see, it did look as if we played quite well in the first half, but we always looked vulnerable to the counter attack.
In that respect, it is well known that Southampton repeatedly attack down their left, but we chose(?) to let Adamson defend that area without any help given to him. Poku (to me the worst player on the pitch in the first half), Kamara, Varane & Dunne offered zero support.
Having said that, Southampton & Middlesbrough look far better sides than anyone else in the division & ultimately they made their class tell |

If Cirkin hadn't been sent off against Preston, we might have not seen Boy Kemper return for the following games!
Rather than just looking at October, I think we should be looking at the games between the international break. There's 7 games in that period & so far we have 7 points from 4 games. I know it's a 3 game week upcoming (8 days if you prefer), but hopefully we will have gained points in double figures from them.
Then we can start looking at the 8 games to take us up to the halfway stage. |

I'm another one Lblock who can't wait for the the preview & the match report, especially the match reports from the away games. Yes, I nearly always find a stream to watch them, but I appreciate that might give me a different view to those that were at the game. I missed going on Saturday due to illness & so this match report fell into the same category.
Another must read from Clive are his Away Days. Whether the visit to the Butt & Oyster at Pin Mill can ever be beaten is a matter of debate (perhaps because I know the pub quite well), but the train trip to Scotland this season & the match at Easter Road were brilliant story telling. As was the trip to Birmingham(?) last season when the table service lady could have had her choice of credit cards to take with her (probable exaggeration). Hopefully the next one will be due soon! |

I'm pleased to read that Phil.
I've not been feeling too well & had to miss the game watching a stream. Iain left the ground on the final whistle & managed to make the 5.36pm train to Colchester Town. Like you, GA was telling him he couldn't get back to Ipswich till after 9pm, so I got off my hypothetical death bed & picked him up from Marks Tey. Back home a little before our usual time.
I'm sure all of you enjoyed the day. |

In reply to nix, I will list which clubs I think we should finish above. This is not based on money spent on transfers, but on the quality of the players at the club. Of course, our injuries might change the picture completely.
I'm sure many will disagree with my choices, but I won't be changing my opinion at present whatever arguments are given for or against them, but I'm certain that they will change as the season progresses :-
Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Bolton, Stoke, Cardiff, Bristol City, Watford, Derby, Lincoln, Charlton, Portsmouth.
I then think we are in competition with Norwich, Millwall, West Bromwich, Sheffield United & Wrexham for the last two play off places.
The teams to finish above us are Southampton, West Ham, Middlesbrough, Swansea, Birmingham & Wolves.
As I say, I base this on what I think is the quality within the Championship squads, irrespective of transfer fees & wages. At present, it would be easy to swap Stoke & Norwich over (many would), but just as easy to include Wolves in our competition for the play offs. I think all of this fits in exactly with the expectations Hunter expressed. [Post edited 22 Oct 22:37]

When was the last time we were going into a three game run against opponents of their calibre & thinking it's possible that we can get something from them?

My first thought last night was Why are we playing Lloyd wide? It didn't look good in pre season & he seemed lost in the opening ten minutes. Then he clicked & that was Alfie's best performance for us. I'm so pleased that he got a goal. And not any old goal either, but the most important one.
A confident, comfortable win rather than an outstanding performance from us in my opinion & that we played better in the 0-0 against Bolton.
The main question from last night is who will be our back up right back?Can Kemper or Cirkin play on the right if needed? Can Morrison, Varane or Alemayohu (or anyone else) fill in? Or do we have to move Jimmy wide when required? A lot might be relying on Adamson staying focused & fit.
Whatever, the solution, I trust these players to deliver for us. There's not been many seasons in our history that I could say that! |

On seeing the highlights it was certainly a foul (we all thought so at the time) & I thought bordering on a sending off. It looked more dangerous than reckless to me.
On other matters, there were many very good performances tonight - Charles, Kemper & Kamara in particular, but the standout player to me was Adamson. From expecting him to be roasted if he was playing, I now have no concerns when he is on the pitch.
The first half last night was so controlled. I think we might have a decent team this year! |
