I'm not saying Canas was great for us, but just drawing attention to his apparent transfer value. You have to be dull to think that giving a free transfer to a player who seems to be rated at £4m was great business. I fear that our aversion to all things Spanish did not work to our advantage.

We waited all summer before offloading him. If he was really that good, like Pablo say, then some club would have stumped up a couple million to get him. Nobody did so we just had to get him off the books because he didn't want to be here.

Innit. He was one of the worst for being scared to pass forwards as well, every time he attempted it he gave the bloody ball away. Leon has certainly lost a step but is still far more effective because of his positional sense.

Scared to pass forwards, absolute rubbish. He made two bad passes west brom at home which almost cost two goals. In a backs to the wall monk performance we lost. Then it was decided he was part of the "problem".

Canas was hardly one for defense splitting through balls, was he?

I have no idea why people are still banging on about him. He would genuinely be 5th choice if he was here now (with everyone available) and would be paid circa 30k a week to play for the stiffs. Madness to keep him and once this midfield issue is sorted next month hopefully his name isn't mentioned again by the Spanish fanboys.

Well to stick with my theme of repeating myself he had the positional sense of a p*ssed flea.

Exactly, Wayne. If he shipped out a quality player for the sake of his nationality then I'd be p*ssed off to but we didn't. Look at Amat for example. Showed a lot of promise in his first season and didn't throw his toys out the pram when Laudrup left. Stayed here to fight for his place and if all goes to plan will be our starting centre half in a couple seasons.

Yes, dear experts, Canas is obviously c**p having made at least 13 appearances this season for a top-half La Liga team. He might not have suited us, but he had a value. Compare his position now with that of others we have released.

Then tell me John why didn't anyone pay up for him if he was so valuable? We got decent fees for Pablo and Chico. It's not like we deliberately chucked him out the as soon we had the opportunity. We waited nearly two months and evidently no concrete offer came so we had to do what's best for the club (and him for that matter) and let him go. Why you can't understand this now is beyond me.

I'm sort of on the fence in regards to this thread. We definitely appear to almost go out of our way not to have the ball these days and given our personnel this is somewhat odd.

That said Brendan was a defeatist away and Laudrup a defeatist against any of the top 6 home or away.

It almost saddens me to say that Leon is a very poor man's Ki this season and Taylor looks like he's playing with and against a team which are a year older in school.

But yet we're doing ok. It's telling to me that the only thing Monk respected about Sousa was how he kept a solid shape whilst not in possession.

Other than the 56% and 560 passes last night you mean vetch?

I agree with you though. Gunt it away and get in shape seems to be the new gospel.

We'd have taken a coat hanger in exchange for Canas. We wanted him out, or Monk did and i was surprised how long he spent in Swansea after being he's not wanted here.He was like shit in a field. It reminded me of David Brent still going into work even though they'd finished him.

How much was he playing latterly

Oh that is right so little people thought he had been abducted by aliens

If we want to maximise profit we do not slag off our own players in public or make it painfully obvious we cannot wait to be rid. Pretty simlistic logic. Why pay for what you know you can get free.

Was it best for the club to let him go? He did a lot of work on and off he ball, always applied himself enthusiastically and looked to go forward. Also had a better pass completion rate than Leon as I recall - but do carry on.

Oh and just to reinterate - Pablo and Chico, Monk rated highly and wanted both to stay. He only let them go because they wanted to go. Canas dropped like a ton of bricks and it was made painfully clear he was not part of Monk's plans. Hardly the sort of polker face required to negotiate the best / any fee.

Nonsense. I just hate the fanboys who pine over mediocre players. Kemy was a prime example and he's not Spanish.

He was dropped because we had Britton, de Guzman and Shelvey all fully fit. He simply wasn't good enough to get into our midfield. If Monk really allowed personal vendettas to affect his management then why wasn't Chico dropped after trying to brick his car?

Of course it was best for the club and for the player. There were clear rifts in the squad developing under Laudrup and Canas clearly didn't want to be here, along with Pozuelo who suffered a similar fate. Monk is not going to give game time to inferior players just to allow them to put themselves in the shop window.

Oh and I don't believe for one second that Chico would have been Monk's choice to start at centre back. Was a brilliant bit of business to actually make a profit off him. Centre back was a position that could definitely be improved upon which is why we were linked to the likes of Van Dijk and subsequently bought Fernandez.

No we haven't. He was distinctly average during his time here but for one or two good performances and by all accounts was a nuisance.

The pining for these mediocre players after a loss is hilarious. The squad is in fantastic shape it just needs a few key pieces at full-back and in midfield. We evidently tried to fix these in the summer but failed to capture our targets. I'd rather we sit back and wait than sign inferior stop-gap players such as Tiendalli.
