Brian Close RIP 10:33 - Sep 14 with 2867 viewsElHoop

As hard as nails for Yorkshire and England (and Somerset) - took on the Windies quickies with no helmet no nothing.

RIP Brian.

Did all that at against the Windies at the age when most cricketers (even back then) had got their pipe and slippers. He captained England but nowhere near as many times as he should have, too outspoken for the old farts at the MCC, who much preferred the more establishment Colin Cowdrey.

Hard as nails and then some. RIP Closey.

Yeah right you are. Great piece by Parky from 2001 backs you up:

At least he died with Yorkshire back on top again.

It would be interesting to know what damage nutting away the West Indies new ball attack had on his brain. I believe Close's toughest opponents were always his Yorkshire team mates though. The civil wars involving him, Illingworth and Boycott lasted as long as the War of the Roses.

From his Wiki:

As well as cricket, Close was also proficient at football, to such an extent that he was signed as an amateur by Leeds United. He became the first Leeds player to play international football at youth level, when in October 1948 he played for England against Scotland at Pittodrie Park in Aberdeen.

Sombody I knew had a brother on Somerset's books when Close and Bothanm were there. One day all 4 of them played golf at the Belfry.
Close played the first 9 right handed in 2 over par. He then changed his clubs and played the second 9 left handed in 3 over.

Some all round sportsman. RIP

Lovely anecdote from Viv Richards on TMS not so long ago - must have been during England's last WI tour - about that innings. He was genuinely worried about Close's safety and asked him "Are you alright, skip?" and Close gave him two words beginning with f and ending with off. Real mark of respect that even when on opposing sides in a test match he was still "skip" to his county colleague.

That'll be one f*ck of a great funeral. 'No flowers or helmets' I should think.

A very entertaining obituary...

A very funny one on Ron Springett too. He, Garrincha and Jimmy Greaves join forces to catch a dog during a World Cup match.
